I "upgraded" from 2x256 Corsair XMS3200 cas2 to 2x512Mb HyperX 3200 (rated at 2-3-2-6-1)

I used to run my Corsair at 300Mhz FSB with 3:2 ratio = DDR400 at 2-2-2-6-1

Now with the HyperX I can only run at 284Mhz FSB with 3:2 ratio = DDR378 at 2.5-3-3-7-1

Now I kinda think it might have to do with the higher density and ultra high FSB. b/c when I run it at 250Mhz FSB with 5:4 ratio (DDR400), I can run it at 2-3-2-6-1

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

It may also be the ram not being able to handle the actual speed. B/c the ram scores are similar at 5:4 low timings as 284 with higher timings. IE: the ram can only put out about 5400Mb/s, it can't handle 5900Mb/s like my Corsair could.

Now, I'm trying to decide if I want to keep the 1Gb in this main rig, or put it in my shuttle where I had planned on putting the 512Mb of Corsair. I lost 200Mhz off my CPU overclock 3.6Ghz down to 3.4Ghz (though now I can drop the voltage to default and it runs cooler), but my mem scores are about 400Mb/s lower. Though I can't feel the difference, my benches are a little lower.
 
higher density modules need to have more relaxed timings as well s get a lower overclock, it is because the dimms are double sided and the density itself. basically.. the more memory you have in the system the less it overclocks
 
Or is that ram not as high of quality as the 256? I am sure there is a 512 stick that will do 300fsb at 2-2-2-6-1.

Yeah, I'm sure its not as high quality as Corsair, they have some good stuff.

HOWEVER, Its only being run at DD400 - its rated speed (b/c of the 3:2 ratio at 300Mhz FSB)

Here's the deal..
at 200Mhz FSB @ 1:1 DDR400 it runs at 2-3-2-6-1
at 250Mhz FSB @ 5:4 DDR400 it runs at 2-3-2-6-1
at 300Mhz FSB @ 3:2 DDR400 it wont run at all not even cas 2.5 or cas 3 - where my 2x256 would
 
hmmm... maybe compatibility issue.. some mobos are picky..
you got a ic7... why didnt you get 2 more 256 modules so you could have dual dual channel :p
