If you think Sony’s Blu-ray players are high priced, get a load of the Denon DVD-3800BCI. Due to ship this fall, this thing cost $1,999. What the?!?! Don’t get me wrong, the unit has fairly impressive specs but is it worth two grand? I don’t see any gold plating:

When it ships in the fall at a suggested $1,999, the Blu-ray player will be the industry’s first with HDMI 1.3a outputs, which transfer all BD disc surround formats in native form via HDMI for decoding by compatible A/V receivers.

Denon always has overpriced crap. Usually high quality crap, but still overpriced crap none the less, IMO.. If I had the kind of money to throw away that could support a home theater that houses in part a $2000 movie player, I doubt I'd be buying Denon...

It's common for Denon in this price range. Nothing new.

Uh, crap? No.

There's a market for this stuff. Denon makes some incredible sources.

$2000 sounds reasonable, probably a bargain. Wait til Meridian or Linn comes out with their blue-ray player...now we are talking big bucks ;)

I'll take two, wait three must get one for my brother also. :D

Also, why not just get one for everyone here. :p

Yeah, seriously.

Hehe, how about a Meridian with balanced XLR output....talk about the ultimate HT source.

I'm more interested in the new recievers that support HDMI 1.3a, time to upgrade the 3806...

Sounds like a reasonable price to me, the decent DVD player is like £600 anyway.

So what makes this special? Does it sends the DTS-HD, DD+, and LPCM tracks to the receiver in native format, instead of transcoding them to AC3? You'd need a receiver that can handle those formats then, no?

I convert all those fancy audio formats to 640kbps AC3 (the highest the spec allows) for all my HD/BD conversions. AC3 at 640kbps sounds amazing, and I honestly cannot see how the human ear could even differentiate any more audio fidelity than that.

But then again, I suppose there's always going to be one guy who thinks he can hear a difference. Just like there's people who claim they can tell a difference between high-bitrate WMA/MP3/AAC and people who say Bose has a certain tone no one can reproduce. :p

Well I can easily tell the difference between anything under 320k files and losless. 320k it depends on the actual recording quality. If it's recorded well I can tell, if not it's hit or miss.

But then, I'm a piano performance major with absolute pitch and call tell you excatly how many cents flat or sharp a piano is.

$2000.00 and no SACD/DVD-Audio support and no ethernet port. Sounds like a bargin to me.

Doesn't seem that bad to me. I wouldn't buy one, but there's a market for the upper-mid (or, if you prefer, low-high end) gear. I remember Denon selling DVD Players that were at least that much long after the prices of DVD players became commodities.

Me thinks many don't realize that there are people that pay several grand for a turntable needle.

High end audo costs more than your house.
Middle Costs more than some new cars
Low End costs (can't rememer this one)

And then, of course, there's "no highs. No lows. just Bose(or blows)" ;)

So what makes this special?

It can make your porn so realistic that you wouldn't need a girlfriend or wife. LOL J/K

I think it's way crazy to buy into new technologies that hasn't gotten real market acceptance -- still the HDDVD and BluRay format war.

Ahh man.

I glanced at the headline a couple times and the whole time I thought the brand name was Demon! Now that it's just "Denon", it's not very fun

Or so realistic you will need to invest in a high end wet/dry vac! :p

I'm a Denon fan and have 2 Denon recievrs at home but the DVD player does seem a bit pricey. On that note though for high end AV that's really not all that much. Have some of you every priced truly high end AV stuff? Brands already mentioned like Meridian are very expensive.

Try out some Kimber Kable power cords... these have standard IEC connectors, they will actually fit your computers power supply. I'm quite fond of their new Palladian cords (I am joking) but the cables and prices are real. Only a grand for a power cord!! - Now that is going too far.

Seriously, what kind of f***en sheit is that... they look like any old regular power cable to me. And what kind of difference can these highend power cable do to enhance your digital hifi solutions?

I don't are who manufactures that. It's not worth it.

Maybe not, but the features are better than anything else out there. From dvdfile

"The player will be the first to market with an HDMI 1.3a output port that is assured to pass as digital bit streams all the advanced audio CODEC audio tracks. Deep color, of course, will be supported, and the BD player will use Realta’s HQV processing. (Denon also announced six decoding receivers that will accept the HDMI 1.3a signals and decode the advanced audio CODEC bit streams.) The player is reported to be the first Version 1, Profile 1.1 Blu-ray Disc player, which supports advanced interactivity features."

People who buy these players probably have at least 15 or 20 grand in audio/video equipment.

Geesh -- nothing to say or any smart remark about these people.

It's all relative. There is nothing wrong with dropping 15-20k on audio equipment if you love and use it often. I pity those using stock ibuds a hell of a lot more then I pity those people.

How many women have thousands in shoes? How many of you have thousands in computers, or cars? As long as your other expenses are taken care of and you have a solid nest egg there is no reason not to splurge. So I do.

I'm not huge into video but I love my audio. Just my headphone setup:

Wadia 301 Cd player
Melos SHA-Gold Reference which I modified
Grado RS-1's, Beyerdynamic DT-770, Super.Fi Pro 5, Westone ES2 Custom in ear monitors

I have 0 debt, a paid off car, and plenty of savings. There's nothing wrong with spending big on hobbies; don't diss it because you don't understand it. How many people would look at you with  if they knew about your computer hobby?

Uhh, I could see the point in Denon's DVD players, since DAC conversion was actually being performed...

But unless it has some kinda scaling that also shines my shoes, I don't see the point in a 2000 drive that reads digital data off a disc, sends it digitally to the projector, which does the display shtuff.

Rare, regarding people :rolleyes:ing at me, because it's like you say it's also relative in the hobbyist. I'm just saying that features vs price should be pretty relative but $2000 for blu-ray, that's twice the price of a quite decent blu-ray player in store. And blu-ray itself should already be hi-def.

Not trying to start any flame war, given that -- I do agree with you that there's nothing wrong w/ spending big on hobbies. Everyone's got different priority with cash. With that said, can you send some money over this way so I can have a hobby instead of working? JOKING... hehe
