Dells must get dusty

lol, The packard Bell use to be my friends family PC back in like 96 or something? They gave it to me last year when they finally got a new computer and it had never been cleaned in all those years. The intake fan was frozen solid and I guess that kept the dust levels from being worse than they were.

Here's after spending some time with the compressor cleaning it:

I upgraded it to 64MB of Nanya RAM and overclocked the P100 to 120MHz :D I plan on using it for a 24/7 webcam server sometime in the future

if i ever saw the insides of a computer THAT dusty, i would run because THE DUST BUNNIES MIGHT GET ME!!!

does that fan even spin anymore?

the whole problem with dells is, they have that fan shroud, making it almost impossible for the dust to leave once it's entered the case...there is no solid airflow going through them cases...

I've seen hundreds of dells, brand new ones, slightly old ones, and very old ones, and agh, did I not even wanna touch the very old ones...LOL

great stuff them OEM computers are!

EDIT:
Worst computer I've ever encoutered was one that was missing one of the rear slot plates, and a rat had gotten into the computer. The guy brought it in saying that he turned it on, and smelt a burning smell, needless to say, even though the rat wasn't still in there, you could definatly tell, there was droppings, chewed up wires, etc...boy was that a fun case!

I should start takign pictures of the ones I have at work.

We had one come from a saw mill, Guy kept saying "It just locks up and shuts down!! This thing sucks, we need a new computer!*

Opened it up and the case was COMLETELY full of sawdust!!. I mean, there was not a bit of airspace left inside the case, even the PSU was crammed full of saw dust. It totally sucked cleaning that thing out......

just curious, did it work afterwards?

This girl that my roommate knows brought her old dell over here the other day because it wouldn't boot up anymore. I popped the case expecting to see maybe a loose cable or something. Came to find out that the problem was with her monitor, not her computer (She had setup her monitor on top of a harmon-kardon sub-woofer, which had over time completely blacked-out the picture).

However, while I had the case open - I figured I should give it a cleaning. There was a pretty think layer of white/grey dust on everything in the case, as you would naturally expect. But when I pulled off the fan shroud to clean the HSF, I found the thickest, gooyest, nastiest layer of black scum I have ever seen in my life. It looked like something you would imagine growing in a toilet bowl... I scrapped that crap out with my fingers and whatever it was the bound it together stained my hands black for a couple of days. Dude - you're going to HELL!!!

I had that same blue heatsink in my old HP...very tight color...anyways...back on subject....:D

my p90 had a copperish redish heatsink :(

my packard bell was:
90MHz pentium
8 meg ram
800meg HD
2mb onboard video (upgradable to 8, never did)
14.4k Modem
Win 3.11

cost: 4000$ with monitor and printer.
date of purchase: late 1994... like, december 1994.

edit: oh yea, 2x cd rom.

I love the look of a computer after I have just cleaned out all the dust and other crap. It looks so much nicer.

I usually resort to cleaning my computer every few months and my parents' computer when I can remember. I can't afford compressed air so I use my face and sometimes a Q-Tip for that stuff that really gets stuck. Any idea where to get a cheap air compressor for cleaning dust out easier?

WE had a 1994 Packard Bell
75mhz
16mb RAM
4x CD
4mb Video (upgradeable to 8)
all that jazz
it was like $4500

that thing had some DUST in it man

My current computer is in an Antec 1080AMG, and even with the dust filter theres a few specs of dust around that I can see. But it'll need cleaning a lot less often at least.

Airflow don't mean jack when it comes to dust...you need to remember a couple of things. Firstly, with a computer there is far more closed case-space than there are places for the dust to get out, therefore you've got more chance of dust staying put than leaving the case. Secondly, you're forgetting that airflow isn't the only force affecting the movement of the dust. You've got gravity (admittedly weak on dust, but still applicable when you turn the fans off), and static, which will easily stop dust from moving unless you point a screamer directly at it. And that's not even mentioning the way dust sticks together.

Basically, the only way to ensure a dust-free computer is to clean it out regularly, use filters or just don't bother with a case at all.

the dells are awful.. my parents have a sony vaio PC, and it is a clean machine, it's been about 2+ years since they got it too. A lady that hires me to work on her computer has a compusa computer (the local kompUSSR is making custom stuff now, not bad with an MSI board) and it looked brand new about 6 months after she had it.
