Dells must get dusty

Most Dell user will never open their cases, and most will probably keep their comps for 2-3 years.

Big dust potential.

Worked at a computer repair shop for 6 months...75% of the PC's brought in were dells. 99% of those dells brought in were FULL of dust. Not just a coat of dust... FILLED with dust.

Mine was full of dust when I took out my ethernet card and sound card.

I'm willing to bet that dust is a problem for most regular users. I bet a lot of people think of computers like tvs and don't even realize you can open them up and change stuff.

Many people think that the monitor is the computer!

Dust is a huge problem for Dell computers. My friend got a new Dell for an early Christmas present... less than a month later, he sends me a picture of the CPU fan COATED and CLOGGED with dust. Fixed it with a can of air.

it's not just dells, it's any computer that isn't opened up and cleaned out every once in awhile. you have fans blowing in, fans blowing out, whatever dust is in the air gets blown in.... not all of it is gonna get blown out.

Sometimes you get that cacked-on evil dust that not even compressed air can get off.

Got pics?

When I first opened my HP it was totally filled up with dust. It's crazy how much dust will build up if you don't take care of your computer. Another reason for so much dust in those computers is that they have such horrible airflow and the dust gets caught in all of the cables just hanging in the middle of the case.

I love that most people have computers they dont open, the i can try to make some $ "fixing" it, or they toss it out, and i jump on that...

Ive had a hsf that wouldnt turn due to dust, spider webs, a cpu casing that needed to be removed and washed but i use a compressor to clean my shit out, a little harsher on some parts, but if you know how to handle it, it gets most everything out (thats what you get for curb surfing)

I have a site with 500 dells Im working and I cant breathe from the dust Ive been cleaning out this last 2 weeks. Literally 1" of dust has collected in these machines. Ive had a hacking cough all weekend.

im sitting here on my moms dell (awaiting all the stuff to shove into my shuttle) and i had to throw in a firewire card to charge my ipod, and the dust was packed half way up the fins on the heatsink, i kid you not. i wa about to blow it out, but then i got to thinking that its just gonna come up in my face, so i wound up havingto use THREE cans of air... that stuff aint cheap either. =\

I did computer repair at a bearing and steel manufacturer for six years. I used to pull Gateway towers out of operator pulpits that would have 4 inches of dirt and soot in the bottom, found a dead mouse in one. Heck, in the bearing plants, some of the old HP printers I had to work on had to be hung over trash cans and drained of oil before I could work on them.

I wish I had picks, some of that stuff, it was amazing it worked at all, of course manytimes after leaning it , it didn't work anymore.

ohh my.jpg

Dust anyone?

^ eww

Oh...people call the computer just the "CPU" round yonder. That weird or is it just me?

Alot of people think that the actuall computer (case, etc) is called "harddrive", atleast here in Sweden.

They're just shooting out what they believe to be big words around computer savvy people because they want to come across as smart, little do they know, it makes then look really really dumb.

The reason that Dell's (and a lot of other OEM computers) collect so much dust is because of the negative air pressure in the case. OEM's like to place auxillary fans on the back of the case as an exhaust. This places the fan farther from the front (and the user), so it's quieter than placing a fan up front. This exhaust fan, combined with the PSU fan (also exhaust), sucks in dust through every opening in the case. The particles enter at such a low velocity that they usually stick to part of the opening or simply fall to the bottom of the case. A way to remedy this would be to equalize (or make slighty positive) the case pressure by adding a front intake fan. If the fan is large and/or turns at a slow RPM, the increased noise will be minimal.

That's my .02

I've seen HP and Compaqs as well full of dust.

Whats even more disgusting is when the person smokes, then the dust becomes sticky and slimy and you almost can never get it off and the computer smells like holy hell. And people wonder why PSU's die and components overheat too....

Its worse when you, the computer owner doesnt smoke, but someone else in the house does. That shit gets everywhere, and you're right, it smells horrible, probably worse than a urinal that 20 people BMed in. Poor computer components. :(

I just had a friend destroy his chipset and processor from cigarette smoke mixed with dust. It had coated the tiny cpu fan blowing over the heatsink blocking airflow completely. It was only a 750 P3 but still a hard lessen to learn. I had to coat the heatsink in wd-40 to eat the nicotine away before I could even attempt to clean it to see if the CPU would still work right.

To make it worse, cigarette smoke+dust+ wd-40 makes a slime that closely resembles used chewing tobacco, but atleast the wd-40 smell covered up the gross stale cigarette smell.

my friends all have dells and the ones has all this white crap in the cracks and it looks ugly as hell, i wouldnt mind if it were sitting under his desk but its RIGHT next to his mouse and i always look at it and feel acids coming up from my stomach

luckily i was enlightened and decided to build my own:D

It's not just Dells, it's every system that has a flow of air going though it. A big problem is that most people put there system on the floor not thinking that a computer is like a vacuum cleaner or air filter.

Many people think that the monitor is the computer!
i kno this kid and whenever i refer to a computer, hes always thinking monitor so i hav to tell him i m talking about the "big white box"...and hes like, ohh, that thing

They're just shooting out what they believe to be big words around computer savvy people because they want to come across as smart, little do they know, it makes then look really really dumb.
i kno rite...my moms exactly like that...annoying but funny after a while.... shes like, "wayne, guess wut, at my office today a TECHNICIAN came in today and hes was opening the computers and then he...(mumbles a lot of words so i cant hear her)...and he says that CPUS are very (mumbles) and ur supposed to (mumbles)...and then our HARDDRIVE is very (mumbles) and he taught me all i hav to do is (mumbles)..etc etc
and she does all this trying to impress me along with a much of handwaving and i m like, wtf.... i bet if she says the exact stuff to a computer dumb person, they'd be like, WOW, ur soo smart... but to computer gurus, they'd be like, wuts wrong wit this person...lol. btw, i m not talking trash bout my mom, jus saying an example of people like that

I have to agree that putting the case on the floor usually isn't the best of ideas, but when you're stuck with a tiny desk in tiny dorms, you do what you can. My nearly bi-weekly dust removal seems to help enough though. And bless my Lian Li's front panel air filter, so nice to have it built in.

I had an old compaq! :)eek:) I use it for a sever now though.
When I was swapping the case I found out this thing didn't have any fnas vesides one PSU fan! I swear the dust was 3/4 inch thick!

grjr...

there this thing called canned air?..and a vacuum cleaner

lol:D

but thats scary....reallie scary

I should start takign pictures of the ones I have at work.

We had one come from a saw mill, Guy kept saying "It just locks up and shuts down!! This thing sucks, we need a new computer!*

Opened it up and the case was COMLETELY full of sawdust!!. I mean, there was not a bit of airspace left inside the case, even the PSU was crammed full of saw dust. It totally sucked cleaning that thing out......

grjr -- that case is CLEAN compared to what this dell was like... there was about 2 inches of dust on the bottom as well.. just sitting...

My school had some 50 75mhz gateways... When we junked them the tech guy wanted to save the working cdrom drives, so we opened them all up... Ill be DAMNED if we didnt find a good 2 shopping bags full of dust.

Im sorry to say that your .02 is worth far less than you think...

There is not a pressure change in a case... In fact, the standard 60mm case fan can only create 0.005 psi (3.4mm water). The larger the fan, the less pressure it can create.

And intake fans suck in dust just as much as an open hole, no... actually more dust. And air doesnt reallly "flow" in the system like you might think... it encounters cards, cables, and other stuff that disrupts flow, creates dead spots, and other stuff like that.

Ideally, the best thing is to have an intake with a filter and no fans on it.

Oh damn we had a packard bell just like that. It was okay at the time but now that I think about it packard bells are like kias(the cars). I'm pretty sure it never got that dusty though.

My dad may be an old hillbilly farmer (Hell he wears Overalls for God's sake!) But he doesn't confuse parts of a computer. Neither does my mom. I guess I actually did get my smarts from my parents.

There was this old gateway that came in once to my store. It had an Original Slot A Athlon...the ones that double as a space heater. It had a 120mm fan on it and that thing had a PILE of dirt in the bottom. Not just dust, DIRT. I got pics on my cell phone of this other case that was pretty bad too. Didn't have a good digi-cam with me so I took one with my phone.

thats insane but i've seen worse. i was working for my high school and had to make a map of where all the networking wire and such went and had to lable each end. lets just say that when i went looking for the student records server i was no where to be found cause it was sealed into a wall by accident when they redid the server room. i got to open that beast up and i could just pick the dust up with my hands it was like playing in dirt. thats what 6 years of remote admin will get ya.
