a friend of mine has a 3 year old dell system running windows me. he was having a huge problem w/pop-ups and decided to format his hard drive for the very first time. he started to re-format using the dell restore disc and all went well 'til 51%. a message popped up saying could not copy such and such file and asking if he wanted to skip or retry format. he tried both and nothing happened. i then decided to stick my full edition winxp to see what it would do. once it found the winxp disc, it would shut the system down. i couldn't figure out why and hope someone here could. any help would be greatful. thanks...

the system would power down once it recognized the winxp disc.

odd, perhaps you have a faulty stick of ram or power supply is on its last stage of life :(

I wasnt aware that any files where copied during a format...
Try booting to win98/ME bootup disk and use the format command to wipe the disc. Then reinstall using your cd.
