Dell server hardware raid cards?

I am wondering if I get a dell server couldnt i just put in a 3rd party raid controller card into one of the pci express slot for it to work?

I am not sure does dell custom bios do something to block 3rd party raid controller cards?
 
External cards are not much of an issue although LSI cards and the PERCs will fight for BIOS supremacy. This is an LSI issue, not a Dell issue. I've also had Sun (Adaptec-rebadge) and Adaptec cards fight.

I think with the tower servers, you can use an add-on internal card with few problems. They're large cases with less custom backplane issues to run into. YMMV.

With the newer rackmount servers, its a lot harder to use a 3rd party internal card with the backplanes. Their cabling is becoming more custom, which honestly isn't bad thing from the perspective of someone who buys Dell servers new with support. Honestly, there really isn't much reason to go 3rd party. Dell Percs are latest gen LSI cards and positively scream. They're very well integrated into the servers and are trivial to support in the gen 12 servers.

IMHO, if you're going the Dell route, go all Dell or forget about it and go with a SuperMicro whitebox. The latter lets you do whatever you want at a lower price point. Their hardware is top notch. Their support isn't as good unless you go through a VAR and even then...
