Dell R300 - Free VM software?

So I have a Dell R300 that has been retired so I can do whatever I want with it.

My initial thought is to upgrade the CPU to an X5460 and the RAM to 20 or 24GB and use it as a development/test environment.

It currently has 2x 146GB SAS drives. I could add a couple internal SATA drives and even possibly convert the removable trays to hold 2x 2.5" SATA drives each.

Only problem is, I don't have any VM software to run on it. Is there a good solution out there that costs little to no money other than running VirtualBox from within Windows?

I would really like to have multiple VMs running at the same time that I can remote into.
 
Is there a free version of vSphere or do you have to manage esxi from the cmd line if you want to stay free?
 
ESXi free comes with the normal vsphere client , you just lack some of the enterprise api's liek backup , vmotion and all that other stuff related to high availability and such , and oh yeah there is a cap on the memory you can use I believe.

They removed the memory cap in 5.5
 
That hard limit on memory was only till 5.1. Now you can go upto 4TB RAM on free ESXi from version 5.5

OP, just make sure that you don't accidentally upgrade any of the VMs hardware version to v10. You will see what I mean when you get to that point. It will cause you to be unable to manage the vm from the free version of esxi.
 
Thanks for the good info.

I have already ordered the processor and enough RAM to bring it up to 20GB.

4x4GB + X5460 for ~$80 is not bad.

I'll get it setup once the parts get here.
