My brother's Dell desktop won't power up after the lightening storm the other night.
I'm guessing the power supply - right ?
I've replaced lots of parts in pcs, but never the PS.
Do I need to look at the one in there to get the specs on it before ordering a new one ?

Send it to Dell if it's still under warranty. There's a good chance that the power supply is not the only problem. Try booting it without any unneccesary devices (leave the CPU, RAM, HDD and video) and see if anything improves. Try each of the parts separately on another computer to make sure they weren't fried.

Yup, definitelly call Dell. If you are still under waranty (the only reason to buy Dell) great, if not, you will have to do some research.

A standard PSU WILL NOT work on a Dell, you need to trick them out somehow.

If his processor is a pentium 4 a standard PSU will work. If its earlier than that, it wont. It might not fit due to the way dell does the back of their case, but it will work if it fits.
