Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Precision 670 off eBay for £170, I just wanted to know what's the highest processors this machine can support, maybe 2 quads with a bios update?

What are the overclocking potentials of this machine?

love to hear from owners of this machine.

You will not be able to run quad cores in that machine. It might support dual core chips with a BIOS update, but there was only one dual core processor released that would fit the socket and match the FSB (sSpec is SL8MA). They will run you $100 a piece and aren't worth buying. To be honest, you're stuck with two Pentium 4 based Xeons, so even a modern Core 2 Duo processor will be considerably faster. You also won't be overclocking at all either. I personally wouldn't have spent $250 on an old system like that.
 
I had 2 of those at my last job. No matter what I did they had major stability problems. This was under very intensive CAD/CNC programming. Tested and replaced everything but the motherboards. Ended up giving the techs some C2D E6700 HP workstations we bought off criagslist for $400. Both were amazed how much faster the "slower rated" C2D was.

Wow... really hoped dell would include some sort of overclocking ability in this machine... oh well I guess I would use this as a guinea pig and install multiple OS's Leopard and Open Solaris comes to mind.

just a thought... there aren't any custom bios I could flash on this machine that let me overclock it?

I think it's a pretty good deal getting a workstation with 2 xeons for a 170 quid delivered.
 
It's pretty standard to not allow overclocking on workstation boards. No one really overclocks them anyway. People don't sacrifice stability for a few extra percentage points of performance in such systems. You can't replace the BIOS either.
