Definitely. I use one in my home VMWare host on a crappy BIOSTAR AMD board; works in any PCI-E slot x4 or bigger. You will want to get one with the battery backup, or purchase one separately; without it, the controller won't let you run in cached-write mode and things will be SLOW.
Interesting that you mention the battery backup. Is this only for raid modes? ie is it quicker when not using raid3/5/6? I wouldn't think a raid1 or jbod setup would need the write back for speed.
