Figured this was the closest forum with the right people [;)] to answer this question.

Just got my hands on a Poweredge R300 rackmount server from a business in town that just closed, complete for <$250. (has a dual core E3113 in it, 2x146GB SAS drives) Trying to find out if anyone knows what the fastest level of quad-core Xeon (Socket 771) I can jam into this. I have seen mention of X3323, X3353, X3363 and L5410. Just can't find anything more definitive.

Looks like it can use just about any of them, the 3.16 would be the X5460.
Processor
Intel® Xeon® processors:

Single Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor 5400 series at up to 3.16GHz
Single Quad-Core Intel Low Volt Xeon Processor L5400 series at up to 2.33GHz
Single Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor 3300 series at up to 2.83GHz

Intel® Core 2 Duo® processors:

Single Dual-Core Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6405 at up to 2.13GHz
Single Dual-Core Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6305 at up to 1.86GHz

Intel® Celeron® processors:

Single Intel Celeron processor 445 at up to 1.86GHz

Also this is the multi-socket forum...this is a single socket system.

What version of bios is in it ?

This was the closest forum to a server forum I thought, I know it's a multi-socket forum. Perhaps there needs to be a dedicated server forum?

1.5.2, the latest from Dell's site that I could find.

here you go,

Thanks for all the info folks! One of my IT comrades was holding out on me (tsk tsk!) and told me he has a R300 with a L5420 running just fine. Found one on fleaBay for $25/shipped.

Apologies if this was not the right forum.
