Dell is now offering complete line of systems that ship without an OS installed. Good news for all you alternative OS folks out there, you can finally can get a Dell system without having to pay for an OS you aren’t going to use.

Dell's new open-source n Series desktop solution provides customers with a DimensionTM E520, E521 or C521 desktop without an installed or included Microsoft® operating system. With the n Series desktop, customers have the flexibility to install an alternative operating system (such as a version of Linux® ), and help reduce the price of this system.

This would be a benefit to customers with volume or charity licensing from Microsoft as well, if the cost is lower than systems with Windows pre-installed. Most companies of any size copy a standard drive image over the top of whatever comes from the OEM anyway.

IIRC, they did it for a while, and then stopped... i couldnt find them for the longest time... and they STILL are screwing you over with a monitor...

YAY....no more craplets :) i can order a system, a copy of XP and not have to sit there and dump a bunch of crap :)

the money you save not having to pay for a useless OS can now be used towards more ram, etc.

ahh even if your a windows user, its a good deal. i have not paid for windows since v3.1 on my ancient ibm ambra back in the day. LOL

good job!

Kinda lame. Can't configure the system (at least the E521N) without a monitor at all. Plus they push the X2 3800+ minimum and no Sempron option.

But you're still paying enough for them to make a profit. You'll still save money if you build it all yourself.

On high end systems I can see saving money, but on entry level I just can't beat their pricing anymore when you factor in things like monitor and printer.. As with many home get asked all the time what to purchase, I just have to recommend Dell for people on a budget.

LOL picture this

noob says "whoa this PC is so much cheaper!!!" "I'll buy it!"

turns it on, "please insert disk with operating system"... "Dell is such a piece of shit!"

If I could get one without a monitor this would be perfect for my parents. They don't need anything special. My Rig on the other hand I would never buy a Dell for, too many parts that Dell will never sell.

It kind of encourages piracy a bit, but at the same time helps the person who already bought a copy of Windows and doesn't see the reason in buying another. Interesting move, i wonder how many people will go for it.

This is pretty old news, unless I dreamed about reading it awhile ago.
Word.

The "n" systems have been available for years. I bought my last one about 2 years ago and it wasn't even a new offering back then.

Remember folks this is for people on a budget

Most of their entry level system don't come with
anything on board as on option to upgrade
the video..

/ missing pcie or agp slots

This is not about money. This is about time and knowledge of computers. If you don't have much of either, you buy a standard prebuilt computer. If you have time but don't know how to build a computer, you buy one of these Dell's. Otherwise you should want to save money, regardless of a little hassle of putting stuff together.

Budget my ass. If you're on a budget, you should want to save money, not time.

Thats something to be proud off? You are the reason pirates have such a bad name.

Whoa, whoa, don't blindly assume that he pirated Windows. We don't even know if he still uses Windows. He might have used Linux after Windows 3.1. Or he could've gotten Windows for free through school or work.

This isn't a good move, it will just result in people saving money by pirating Linux, instead of buying Windows like a good consumer should. Anyone who is using a computer and didn't pay for Windows pirated windows, even if they aren't using windows.

WTF? I bought a gateway a few months ago, with an x2-3800+, xp media center (with free vista upgrade) 2gb ram, 16x dl burner and 250gb hdd (sata even) for $300.. How are these money saving? No monitor though, of course :
