I reinstalled the wifes netbook to the factory with USB image installed.

Made with the dell software that came with the netbook.

The install goes very smooth. No issues at all.

I can install windows updates and other software but when the computer reboots
that's when problem is.

The netbook comes to a black screen and says A device cannot be started and nothing happens. Have choice of either escape or exit with same result screen goes black
then starts back up to same black screen

The original issue as to why the factory restore was the wireless does not work at all.

fn + f2 has no effect. I had linux on it. So I figured restore back to Windows 7.

Is the netbook toast or is it just a bad drive.

She told me she think the wireless stopped working after some storms in the area.

Thanks

Try a safe boot. Also try having the wireless off. Does the wireless work in Linux?

I cannot boot the computer at all now. The wireless did not work in Linux. Wireless does not work in Windows. That is why I put Windows 7 back on so I could easily install a wireless USB I have.

I was not dual booting the netbook. It had linux mint on it for a while before the wireless crapped out. Now it just has the original os that came pre installed. I would consider buying a wireless adapter if I could get it to boot.

If you had Linux on it, I'd make sure you fix the boot loader. Grub will leave enough different that Windows won't boot.

How would I fix the boot loader. Putting the factory image back on doesn't the restore the computer back to like it was new. In terms of the software I mean.

I believe the restore is just a file copy which won't fix the bootloader.

You need to boot with usb or cd drive drive with windows on it and use the recovery option to go to a command prompt.

Then, and issue the commands.

Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
