Howdy all

Ok so I've OC'd my Desktop, wasn't hard but its done now. But my laptop is still only 400mhz, yah ok it isnt much and it probably isnt worth overclcoking but it would be nice to have it OC'd a little.

Its a Dell Latitude CPi A400XT (400mhz) with 128mb RAM, now I've bought another 128mb SODIMM from a CPi (low profile, must get a dell chip, no others fit) so that will be helping out this computers performance a little bit, but I wouldn't mind figuring out if I can bump the hz up a little bit.

Does anyone know if it is possible to do this? I've gone through the bios looking for things to play with, with no success, and haven't done a laptop before.

First things first Dells do not overclock easily at all. They have no external access to the clock speeds. Overclocking a Dell is close to immpossible and the fact that you have a laptop makes it even more immpossible. Laptops do not have any provisions for overclocking because of the limited cooling inside them. You can't just go slap on a massive heatsink because there's no room.
 
I'm not looking for a huge increase either, just like my desktop, only 500mhz increase and its still well within limits of temp and such, I know I would get no where close to 500mhz on the laptop but wouldn't mind a little or even just to tinker.

I know I can get CPU upgrades so I may just consider buying a compatible CPU and while I am in there see if I can tinker with it a little.
 
you're pretty much near the limit as far as upgrades go
you're better off getting higher density ram
 
Well I got RAM coming, I may look into the CPU upgrade but I will probably do that after the Inspiron comes so I still have something to mess around with if I mess up this one.
 
Google "Clockgen" and see if it supports your board, you could possibly pinmod it also.
 
I own an old Latitude CP(233mhz stock but i believe its the same chasis/mobo as the CPi) which i have upgraded pretty much to the max. More ram and a 466mhz Celeron(the fastest mmc-1 CPU that was made), and a bigger hdd.

I am pretty sure there is no way to overclock it and upgrading the cpu/ram was a project. It required flashing to a special oem BIOS to get it to recognize the new cpu/larger memory modules. Also it developed serious heat issues with the new chip(im guessing the original heat sink assembly was not meant for the heat of the 466mhz.) it will now shut itself down after about 10min under load. And every so often it will fail to boot and you have to reseat the processor... which involves removing the keyboard and the hsf.

They are fun lil machines to tinker with as long as your not expecting anything amazing out of it. They are very quirky though. The people on the dell forums were actually very helpful, you can see what ppl have been able to upgrade thier machines to.
