Dell Laptop?

I am looking into buying a laptop for when school starts up soon. I'll only be going into my senior high school years (no intense college/university stuff) but I think a laptop would still help me a lot for note-taking and stuff. I was looking at going with the cheapest available from Dell, but my instincts are still screaming at me saying "Don't do Dell, it's just dumb!". Infact I just finished sorting through the mess of errors and problems that is my friend's parents' computer, which is a Dell desktop. Apparently some 4600 model... Anyways I was wondering what you guys thought about getting a cheap dell laptop. Do you have any bad experience with Dell? Good experience? etc?

My dell was a great machine for the price. It felt flimsy, was noisy, and the hinges broke after a few years but it did it's job as a computer well. If you just want a basic computer dell's are a good by, but be gentle with it as it is no thinkpad.
