Hi.
I want to purchase a Dell Inspiron laptop and connect an external monitor to it with dvi.
The specifications on Dell's website say that the Inspiron laptops in general do not have dvi connections. But after chatting online with a technician, he said that because this particular model has a dedicated graphics card, it has dvi.
Do you think this is safe? Could it be just a mistake of the technician? Cause I don't see it anywhere in the web site.

It's still sortakinda rare to find an actual DVI output (not input; you're hoping to attach an external so the laptop is outputting a video signal over that connection), some do exist. I'm thinking that the DisplayPort technology is going to be moving in soon because it's a smaller connector than DVI (which is like twice the size of an old VGA connector).

I would say if you find a Dell laptop that you're interested in, take a look at the specs to see what they list. If they show a DVI output, that pretty much guarantees the model has it - you can always hit Dell's support website and look at the manual for the model in question, check the views in the manual (front, back, left, right, etc) and see if it physically shows a DVI connector in the photos.

Thank you.

I have to order it through the internet and I think it will be kind of difficult to find photos of the specific model with the dedicated graphics card. Inspiron laptops in general only have vga out, and I was told that the vga out is unable to support a 1600x1080 resolution. Hmdi would be just as good as it can be converted to dvi easily.

I talked to another "technician" (?) ("Chat" through Dell's website) and the second one told me that there is no dvi or hdmi, the opposite of what the first one told me. Very unprofessional. I could have made a wrong purchase.

What's the model of the laptop? The dell studio 15 has HDMI. Also, VGA can easily do 1680 x 1050.

Yes, the Dell Studio does have HDMI but it is significantly pricier because of its "high definition" display, which, generally, I won't be using - I will be working with the external monitor.

The laptop I am talking about it the top right model which can be found on this page
[I am going to be in the UK]

If you add the four-year warranty, the total price is 590 english pounds (roughly 1000 dollars). The specs seem very good (powerful cpu, 4 gb ram, big hard disk) and the warranty and after-sales service (for which I've heard good things about Dell) is of high importance to me. So I consider it to be a very good machine for me, and I think I will take my chances with the analog signal.
