Dell is upsetting me

Hey all I've got a decent rig as you can see in my signature, but I'm still looking for a proformance boost. The only problem(s) are
1: I know nothing of Overclocking
2: I recently heard that there is noway of OC a dell is that True?

If there is a way plz get back to me.

yep, it's true, no overclocking on dell's.


If you wanted a performance increase by overclocking (minimal increase though), you would need a new motherboard, and maybe a new power supply. Your current power supply might not be up to the task of allowing the extra power needed for the new hardware/changes.

Well that sucks big time. Oh well I found a program thats doing a very good job increasing Prefomance. It's called XP Smoker Pro. Awsome program but my trials out, there goes $40

Dell allows up to 400 MHz oc on the XPS with Pentium 840 EE dual-core, but not for other processors Same policy applies for most OEM systems.

Well, hardware OCing is out. You could always use clockgen Clockgen, people seem to like it and its from the same people who make cpuz and used to do wcpuid. Its worth a shot, and its a nice alternitive to buying a whole new setup just to be able to OC with.

If you upgrade the motherboard on your Dell you MUST upgrade the PSU also. Dell has a nasty habit of useing industry standard connectors but switching the pins around on you. Put a standard Motherboard in that case with your dell PSU and you risk frying your motherboard, or if you use a standard PSU with your dell motherboard same thing. Dell moves the voltages around on the connectors so that you can only use there motherboard and power supplies, try anything differant and you in trouble. I do know that they use to do this, not really sure if they still are tho!

don't forget you will need a new version of windows also as the one that comes with your dell is loaded for the bios on your motherbaord only.

I dont think this is true, i have a dell laptop (inspiron 5150) and I use the Windows XP Pro CD Key on the sticker on my desktop rig too with no problems, I even called microsoft to get a new varification code thing and told them "Yeah, it came preinstalled on a system and I've got it on one other." So they dont seem to care all that much. You might need to find someone who has a real XP CD though, although my laptop came with that too. But thats sort of besides the point, as I doubt you want to upgrade what I assume is a fairly new system. And yeah, you can overclock your video card really easily in windows too, I don't know the names of any for ATI but for my 6800nu I use rivia tuner + coolbits.

I have used (yes, I know, it's illegal) some Dell copies of XP that came with the systems my parents bought on many different configurations of hardware. Cheers!

Yeah but your vid card is an Ati. Get Ati Tool for oc'ing and fan control, you can download it from guru3d.com and other sites.

well i have a dell 8250 and it comes with the bios for my motherboard pre loaded on my copy of xp,maby they don't do this anymore but if you check dell forums it was a problem for upgraders......fact.....
