Hey,
I just picked up this Inspiron 8500 laptop from Craigslist. I reformatted the drive with Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition. There use to be a way on the Dell website to enter the Service Tag and it would tell you what was inside your machine. Now they just threw at me 300 drivers and said pick one. I am not able to locate the Video driver, Wireless driver, ethernet driver or PCtel modem driver. Any help would be appreciated. I guess they don't want their machines purchased 2nd hand. Plus the fact that Dell support will not help me since i am not the original owner.

This is the simple way of getting drivers for your system:

Start at www.dell.com, click home, click support, select inspiron from notebooks, go, choose inspiron 8500, ->, go

http://support.dell.com/support/dow...s=dhs&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_8500&os=WW1&osl=EN#

You only really need the chipset, audio, video, network and GlidePoint drivers. The system bios download is there too but it hasn't been updated in almost a year.

If the video driver won't install on MCE, just download the current drivers from nvidia and get a replacement inf file.

I loved my 8500 w/go 4200. Hope yours works out.

How do you identify what hardware devices are inside the laptop. Dell is of no help.

No service tag = no way to know specifics. Then again you could go into your bios and find out the service tag! =D Other then that open the laptop up to see whats inside! :p
