Just read this over at el Reg:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/26/dell_back_up/

The Texas-based firm says that for an extra $99 it will install a second, 80GB hard drive in new Dimension E310, E510 and XPS 400 models. The drive will be configured to continuously back up the main drive, protecting personal data against the dreaded hard drive crash.

Apparently, RAID-1 is backing up data.. especially since they say
Dell says the idea behind DataSafe is to make data recovery easy for consumers, news agency AP reports.

"You don't have to mess with any widgets or gears. It's ready right out of the box," a spokesman said.(my emphasis)

I really don't see how RAID-1 ever recovers data!?

More than likely, the drives will not be continuously syncronized like a RAID-1 is. More likely is that the primary drive will be copied to the backup drive on a schedule. This is quite a bit more resistant to corruption, etc, than a RAID array with one file system is. Not perfect, as it doesn't protect data against natural disaster, but much better than SLED and really strong in the simplicity and capacity departments.
