I decided to move forward with a SAN solution. Looking at a Dell EqualLogic PS4100x with 24 x 600GB drives in a RAID 50 + 2 hot spares as they are pitching it. 4x1GB ISCSI. I'm told that will give me about 14TB usable and plenty of IO. It's $25k for the box and $29k with redundant switches.

Total demand atm is:
Throughput: 248MB/sec
Sustained IOs: 1534
Peak IO (very peaky): 4000
Read/Write ratio: 88/12
Used space: 5TB

Going to use this for a two host HyperV cluster via ISCSI on Dell R710s. 18 virtual machines including SAP and SQL. I'm going to have to manage this thing with whatever training I get from a vendor and a small handful of hours a week.

Any other solutions I should be looking at? Any thoughts on this setup?

We are in the middle of installing our EqualLogic 4100- we went with a half populated array of 900GB drives. 4 x 1GB iSCSI. We are using 2 x 6224 PowerConnect dedicated switches.

We've got 2 x R910's with 2 x X7550's and 128GB of RAM each.

I've got 15 VM's (SQL 2008 R2, Lync 2010, Exchange 2010, AD etc.) we are transitioning to the cluster.

We'll see after this week. Fingers crossed! (I'm confident it's going to be a good investment for us though..)
 
24x 600GB drives in RAID-50 with 2 spares (2x parity + 2x spares = 20 data drives) gives 12TiB raw usable space. (12000000000000 bytes or 10.91TB)

It should sustain at LEAST 2000 IOPS from disk. (20x 10K data drives - 100 IOPS each)

Possibly 4000 or more peak depending on workload and caching on the EQL I would guess.
 
Keep in mind that if you need to expand you will be paying for all the replication stuff again. Also, the controllers are active/passive.

Take a look at the compellent offering to see how a similar configuration stacks up price wise.
 
Just curious if you guys have any updates on how your stuff is working out. I have 2x4100XV's with 12x600gig 15k sas disks that should arrive in jan (with the 6224 clustered switches for iscsi) and was wondering what your thoughts were after you migrated to the new hardware?
