Dell E1705 Light Leakage Question

Hi Folks,

My E1705 mega-laptop just arrived, and I love everything about it. However, when the XP screensaver runs, I do see light leakage across the bottom. My question is, does it matter that much? Meaning, I obviously don't see it when I'm using the laptop for everyday stuff (Visual Basic 2005 development, Photoshop, FlightSim X, etc.), so should I be concerned? Will it ever worsen or cause issues down the road, or is it just what it is? I'm thinking I can live with it, but I see many posts with folks being aggravated. True, it'd be nice not to have it.

Much appreciated if someone would reply with some thoughts. Thanks!

PS: Some like to know the specs, so: T7200 Core 2, 17" True-Life 1900x1200 WUXGA, NVidia 7900 GS 256mb, 1GB ram (for now), 7200rpm SATA 80GB, DVD burner, Bluetooth, Intel Wireless, $1,306 after 30% coupon, and free ship... and if anybody's wondering, I get 30 to 60 fps with the Flight Simulator X Demo with Med/High settings on everything (12 FPS on my Dimension P4 3gHz, same type Video card!). So this laptop does scream and kick quite well. Not an XPS M1710 but reasonably close for ½ the money.

The light leakage is common, if not normal on e1705 screens. The LG screens seem to have the best reputation for quality. Dell uses at least 3 suppliers for the E1705 screens. If it doesn't impact your normal usage, don't worry about it. If you're still concerned, you can get Dell to replace the screen (or they'll send you screen and you can swap it yourself). I went through 2 Samsung screens and settled with an AU Optronics in the end. I swapped the LCD parts myself so I could decide for myself between the screens. The risk you run with letting a service vendor or Dell swap your screen is that you may get a worst one, and the turnaround time to repeat the swaps takes awhile. To their credit, Dell has a great support policy for satisfaction (i.e free cross shipping on part and machine swaps), but sometimes you have to do their tech work.

Great advice... that's exactly what I'll do: have Dell ship another and do the swap, keeping the best one.
Thanks!
