Does any one know how to test a power supply for a Dell dimension 8100? I am working on a neighbor’s machine, which won't boot; power led just flashes and no beep codes. I am assuming it is the power supply, but this particular model uses two non-standard (proprietary) power connectors. I called Dell to price a replacement and they want $68.00 to my door for a 250W power supply!!! Which I am not sure is really the problem.

Thanks

Does that model have the 4 diagnostic lights on the back of the computer? Many Dells do. If it does, observe what they do as you try to power on the system and call dell. Outside of that, the 8100 PS is probably a standard P IV power supply, try it in a different P IV system... good luck

It is not a standard P4 power supply. It has a standard 16pin power connector (with some of the wires missing) and a nonstandard 20 pib connector. there is a good picture of one on ebay, here .

However, I will have to check and see if there are lights on the back. I found the codes for the lights on the back at Dell's site, so I will check when I get home.

Thanks
