Let me start by saying I have almost zero experience with fiber connections. That being said I need to get a 10Gbe transceiver module for our new Dell server. Don't know why it wasn't included when we purchased the server and now they want $1000 to buy one. Are there aftermarket ones that are compatible that don't cost as much or should I just suck it up and spend the money?

Would something like this work?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

From my previous conversations the SFP+ is industry standard and dell stated that even my Cisco Modules will work.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

If that's the case can I just find one of Amazon and order that? I'm not opposed to spending the money if that's what I need. Of course my Dell rep says I need to buy theirs.

Seems to be that way for Fiber modules. For direct connections, there's still some segregation.

So I just ordered some 10GB SFP+ modules from fiberstore.com like a few days ago, they were VERY cheap ($25 each) so I thought, why not? When I did they actually e-mailed me and asked me the model number of the unit I would be putting them in and told me they would ensure compatibility. I was surprised. Granted I haven't tried them yet and they are from China so it could be a wash but for $25 whatever.

In my experience Cisco tens to be more picky about what SFPs you put in them than other brands so although compatibility isn't guaranteed it's likely.

I ended up ordering the pricey one from Dell to begin with. I needed to get this up and running and I still had room in my budget.

I may try some from fiberstore.com or Amazon to see if the cheap ones work. I'll need more for another project coming up and if I can save some money on the transceivers that'd be great.

I appreciate everyone's input on this.

Take a look at Finisar branded SFP or SFP+ modules. They are an OEM make manufacture optics for many companies including Cisco, HP, Dell, etc. Same hardware.. different label. I've got probably a hundred of them in production with no issues.
