EMC has a controlling interested in Vmware. Dell buys EMC, how does this affect vmware from a technical standpoint, how does it affect vmware from an investor view? Seems like vmware just tanked 10% this morning on the news.

"There's one caveat to the $67 billion figure, and that's VMware. Rather than being folded into Dell, it'll remain an independent publicly traded entity. Dell's agreed to pay $24.05 per share to EMC shareholders, plus tracking stock in VMware."

In the short term I would expect nothing to change. VMware is expected to stay public and separate from Dell.

An email from our EMC rep says that nothing will change for the next 9-12 months while everything is being sorted out. I doubt that this will mean much to VMware in the long run, but I can see changes could be coming to the EMC side.

Why is vmware stock getting hammered in the last weeks. I think earning marginally beat estimates. Was growth protected to slow down.

Edit: stock getting absolutely bcrushed today.

Apparently the forward looking guidance wasn't too positive in the earnings call. That combined with the uncertainty as to what Dell intends to do with their newfound position in VMWare has resulted in many analysts downgrading VMWare. Still though 22% down in a single day is harsh. Nearly 50% down from their recent peak in 2014.

VMware is in huge trouble. Yes they are in the green for now, but the direction the Industry is going has VMware/EMC/Dell/others far behind the curve and scrambling. Hence, one of the reasons you saw this merger in the first place.

Remember what happened with physical bookstores when Amazon crushed it with the Kindle during christmas how many years ago? They are doing the same thing here. Snuck up and took all the things, again. Every year i keep listening to the same old VMWare/SAN Admins just ignoring this space, but eventually its going to be reality for everyone.

Read this article for some reference on what we are starting to see happen.

VMware stock is taking a dive due to uncertainty in the market, but VMware isn't going away anytime soon.

Public cloud environments are great and clearly the ideal platform for many applications, however there are still a variety of applications and use-cases where they don't make sense. Eventually, most organizations will realize that a hybrid cloud approach will be the most beneficial (and the on-prem component will generally run VMware).

Despite this, the future of Dell and EMC are tough to gauge at this time.

This is my view. I can't see us putting everything in the public cloud. The route we seem to be going is public facing stuff goes up. Local Use/High Security stays on prem.
