Apparently, AMD's decision to partner with Dell has increased demand so much for AMD processors that it has hurt the small distributors who "made AMD," according to this article. I think it's funny and sort of ironic that AMD, once the little guy who had no hope of taking on Intel is now so popular that its fabs can't keep up.

Maybe......however the numbers are a lot more than the $1 million mentioned at the end of the article if there is a shortage.

There's been a fairly short supply for the past few years, which is why AMD has had stupid high prices up until a couple months ago. While the Dell account has definitely taxed that supply... that isn't the main cause. The main cause is their lack of fab space.

I think you got it twisted :D

Last year many of us tried to explain to AMD followers that AMD didn't have the volume needed to supply someone large as Dell after already supplying HP and etc... Has nothing to do with how popular it is. It's Volume! Yes, the Fabs can't keep up, that's been the problem all alone. That's why Dell was limited to selling boxed processors. There were never enough AMD volume to change over an assembly lines:)

you make it sound like nobody who was following amd last year had any clue what was really going on.... thanks ;)

Poncho, of course that's the problem. thus why amd built fab36 and is working on getting another one here in the states

I felt the same way when I read that! It's like we're not of the right intelligence level...

it's typical of the way donnie argues, and is quite hard to refute.. broad sweeping claims that tend to be false for the majority of cases ftw!

I make it sound like most of the folks on this side forum we in denial;) The last time Dell said they couldn't go with AMD because of Volume, many here called them a lie! Need me to dig up a link to that thread?

The thread spawned from this news item.
"While we would never say 'never', the economies would have to be compelling, and customers would have to demand it," Rollins said.

Rollins was then asked if limitations on AMD's current manufacturing capacity were a factor in Dell's decision-making.

The Dell executive said AMD might have trouble meeting additional demand for high-volume PC products, but not necessarily for chips used in high-end PC servers.

Then again here.

i'm not asking for what the news was, i'm asking for the thread where you had to "tried to explain to AMD followers that AMD didn't have the volume needed". nice try though ;)

if you can't produce, i'll have to assume that you're simply embellishing to get a reaction

I'm doing whatever you say I'm doing!

I think the real matter is.. "Is there any snow up in Rochester yet?" Where did that come from? lol
