This looks to be the perfect laptop (for me) to use at college during down time between classes for homework and entertainment. Was just curious to how often coupons come out for this laptop? Would it be worth the wait? Thanks...

Keep an eye on dealmein.net, they're usually pretty on top of the coupons. The good ones - the $750-off a $1500 machine coupons - tend to come out after the end of the quarter, so I'd look out for one in mid-October, if not earlier.

There is a 40% off + 50 dollar off coupon over 999... I think i'm going to bite the bullet.

My G/F has it by my recmendation and its great. I only have one gripe and its the keyboard. Its so damn small.

I would just get the 1.7. I think she went for the 1.8 Really no difference.

The funny thing is, use it long enough and regular laptop keyboards feel expansive.

How does this look guys?

Pretty.

I'm tempted to get either one of those or an X1. 4.2 lbs or 2.1 lbs.....

Does anyone suggest I look at a different laptop? I want to make the right decision. I want it to be small, protable, affordable, and decent power. Something along the lines of the size/shape of the 700m and a widescreen monitor is a plus+ If possible something better than onboard graphics, but I don't think i'll find that in this size range? Any help or comments are greatly appreciated

x1 no integrated optical drive :(
How often do you actually use the optical drive on a laptop, though?

<-- X1 owner who's never even plugged in his D-Bay optical drive

Today a 35% coupon came out that you can use towards any 700m, not one of the pre configured ones like the 40%... so now i'm saving 200 dollars, 1,200 shipped with tax doesn't sound too bad, what do you think? For the same specs just less software

I wouldn't get all of that ram. If you want two gigs, get one gig on one DIMM. If you only want 1 gig of ram for that machine, get one 512 stick on one dimm. Buy the rest of your memory from crucial. Dell charges WAY too much for their system memory.

You'll save bigtime.

** Edit ** Take a look at the Dell configurator. To add another gig of RAM they want 250.00 You can configure your machine with one dimm of one gig, and get the other gig for $155.00 at Crucial.

It's 60 dollars for 512 and 40 more for another 512 stick for a total of 1gb

I went ahead and bought the 700m.

1.8 ghz
1gb ram
80gb hdd
dvd+rw
upgraded the battery to the 8 cell

1,191.71 shipped with taxes.

I just purchased the Gateway 250X. 1.73Ghz, 533Mhz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD and additional 6cell battery, ~$1400 with free shipping.
I'm very happy with it as the 14" widescreen at 1280x768 is very nice. Great little 'puter for taking to school or sittin' on the couch with.

I'm going to be doing a fresh install as soon as I get it. Any special steps I need to take since its an OEM?... Just reformat, install xp, install chipset drivers and graphic drivers, correct?

yea, make sure everything works before the fresh install...
and during the fresh install, keep the internet as far away as possible, and get some anti-virus or firewall on there before the internet gets a hold of it :p

I used www.gotapex.com when I got mine. It was $750 off any Inspiron over $1499.

Deals aren't quite as good right now, but will probably be back if you can wait.

Whatever you do dont forget to call in and have them stack on your sudent 8% discount. If they refuse beg and plead and tell them you really need this you are a poor college student.

Even if its been shipped, you think they will give me the student discount?

What process do I need to follow for applying the student discount to my order? Would I want to configure my laptop, add it to my cart, then call in? Or, do I need to do the entire order over the phone and just give them my coupon code?

They will not accept coupons over the phone, it has to be done through the internet.
