Hey guys, I have a Dell 700m with a Pentium M 725 (1.6ghz) processor running on a 400mhz FSB. Anyone know how I could maybe raise my multiplier higher than 16 or at least change my FSB to 533? I havent seen anywhere that shows how to with this model, was wondering if u [H] guys had any ideas...

thanks in advance!

how many vents does the 700m have, is overclocking a smart idea?? lol, btw, i was thinking about getting one of those 700m's, how do you like yours, and what made you choose that brand of ultraportable?

I'm not trying to be mean, but the short answer is no to both of your questions.

Buy a faster chip. The max multiplier is locked on your production CPU.

Buy another laptop. The chipset (855GM) and clock generator in your 700m doesn't support 533MHz FSB. I haven't seen a 533MHz chip running at 533MHz FSB in any 855GM laptops (although it is possible with clock generator support), Dell or not. All laptop manufacturers waited for Sonoma (mobile 915 chipset) for 533MHz FSB support.

I wanted a small laptop with an optical drive built in. I picked the 700m because of the $750 off coupons Dell was offering at the time.

how much did you pay for it with the 750$ off?
Probably around $750 + maybe tax. The coupon was $750 off $1500, requiring about $200 in upgrades to the base P-M 1.6GHz version.

I also got my laptop with a $750 off coupon. I wanted the go 6800 and bluetooth upgrades so I spent $1150 shipped on mine. :D A 9300 could have been cheap as $849 after coupon.

Read the second post.

I don't think ANY of you looked at that link.

How to PIN MOD YOUR 400FSB chip to a 533FSB Chip.

I don't think you understand the link. :p The reason you can pin mod 400MHz FSB processors on the Sonoma (915) platform is because the chipset and laptop motherboards support running at 533MHz FSB. As I described above, virtually no 855 chipset laptops support 533MHz FSB.

I did my own guide here and have pin modded several desktop processors (tualatin pin remappings, FSB and voltage adjustments) and 2 laptop processors. See http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=912387 for my 9300 400MHz FSB to 533MHz CPU pin mod and disassembly guide. And see this thread from April on the background of the mod http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=888963 and why it doesn't work on 855 chipset laptops. :p

thanks for the replies guys....

anyway, to answer some questions... well I want to OC my laptop just because sometimes when i'm multitasking like crazy the system chugs, and i know OC'ing wont get rid of that, every little bit helps IMO....

I love my 700m, i got it with the 1/2 of coupon as well, i paid a little over 800 for mine.

I think the 700m has sufficient cooling... espcially since i applied arctic silver 5 to the proc

im a little disappointed that i cant get 533 FSB on this.... ah well, thanks for the insight guys, it is very much appreciated
