NVidia 7800 series has 1 dual-link DVI port even though it is dual DVI. The prrimary port is the only one that has support for resolutions exceeding 1920x1200. Incidently, 30" monitors have a native resolution of 2560x1600, far exceeding 2048x1536. This is a vast amount of real estate for a single display, trust me, I know.
 
So what is the most inexpensive AGP based dual-link DVI card out there right now?

Why would anyone buy a 30" monitor and then get the least expensive dual link card? That would be like buying a race car and using budget tires.

For desktop stuff it doesn't matter, I mean, no dual link card is going to be a bargain pacement PCI regular 4mb affair. As long as I get great 2D image quality the rest doesn't matter, I don't intend to use my PC for games (thats what my consoles are for).

I also have an only AGP mobo, and I've come to the conclusion that it's better to change the mobo (+cpu+etc) and buy a PCI-X card. AGP is just at the end of its life and I don't want to spend my money on something that I can't use anywhere else.

That's my conclusion, of course.

Heh, this monitor is going to strain my upgrade budget as it his. Hell, I was actually planning on spending the $1500 plus on a new tower, but I figure my P4 2.4 has a few more years of life left in it...

There is nothing wrong with AGP if you don't want a gaming card. I mean, what does a 7800GTX do for me that a 9600pro wouldn't other than offer more FPS in games I'm not going to play on my computer anyway?

I'm in the same boat as you, ie I could care less about having a gaming card for this monitor. That being said the cheapest card you can get now I believe is the ATI 9600 pro pc & mac edition. About $185 on froogle.

I may just wait for the x1600xt series though and see how much those go for.
 
Apple now puts DL capable video cards in all their current Power Mac G5's. They all use the 6600's.

as I said, the main reason I resist buying a dual-link AGP graphics card is that I won't be able to use it when I upgrade my CPU (something I probably do in one year).

I don't want a gaming card either, but I don't want an AGP card that I can't use in my next computer.

Imagine that you spend $150 (or more) on that dual-link AGP card. After some months of use you realize that the CPU is not at the same level as your Dell 30" and then you have you to buy another dual-link card because there aren't mobo's for new CPUs with old AGP ports.

I say this because I currently run an ASUS 5200 AGP with the 2405 and I can clearly see that card not being at the same level with the screen. As you can see, I had the same question as you. My decision: to buy a mobo+cpu+card somewhere in february.
 
Mal - I see your point, but there are still new AGP motherboards being made, so, I could always do a CPU upgrade later on and still keep an AGP card (AGP to PCI-E was a completely unneeded and weird move...)

Xephian - I saw a few websites that said the 6600 could do dual-link... I wonder if that is all of them, or just certain makes/brands. What scares me off from it is that some websites seem to use 'dual-dvi ports' and 'dual link dvi' interchangeably...

RoyalAssassin - I just read yesterday that the X1600 is coming out in AGP flavors... Supposedly in January too, I might wait on that. Plus, by Jan there should be some after christmas Dell coupons floating around to get the monitor for 25% off or something..
