Hey guys,

I recently bought this monitor and have been thoroughly impressed with it in every way except its ability to display a satisfactory image for standard definition videos. I've tried using a wide variety of software from WinDVD to Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player and Media Player Classic. I have attempted to use ffdshow to create a good picture but for all my efforts I cannot reach the ideal zone between being a blur and a mess of pixels. On my previous monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 930BF), I required no fiddling at all to view DVDs in a highly impressive way.

Is this monitor just incapable of displaying good DVD (also Xvid Divx, avi etc.) quality or is there some way of configuring it to do so? I made sure to display at the 16:10 ratio but it doesn't help. It's not that the image looks stretched or squashed, it's that it appears like early VCDs did or like everything has been smudged in Photoshop (on the ideal states I have managed to create!).

The only clue I have come across to get DVDs displaying well is to use a standalone upscaling DVD player or Xbox 360. These seem to be giving better results but can anyone shed some more light on this?

Would really appreciate it if anybody can help me as if not I will be selling it on eBay. :(

P.S. It is a revision A03 model.

Sounds like you're in a trying mood, in which case you should try avisynth

Here's a Guide

Basically you do 3 things: resize, denoise, and sharpen

For resize you use ffdshow's lanzcos resize, tap-2, luma sharpen if you aren't using a separate sharpening filter.

For denoise, there are a whole bunch of denoise filters, a few of them are hqdn3d, DeGrainMedian, RemoveGrain, fft3d, and others.

Sharpening you basically have limitedsharpenfaster and SeeSaw.

The ordering of filters matters. Generally you denoise before sharpen, and resize as early as your computer can keep up.

doom9.org is the authority on avisynth and everything DVD. Visit their forums for your quest for ever better picture quality.

Thanks for responses guys.

Unfortunately I just can't produce a good Standard Definition video picture on this monitor still though. I doubt it is possible tbh. I'm resting all my hopes on the 360 now...
