Up till now I have only printed-out on my color laser, images created on my Dell 2407WFP. Recently I had an image created on it reproduced professionally. Quite frankly, I am stunned at the unwelcome difference between the 2407 screen image and the professionally printed image, which latter is far denser, darker, higher-contrast and generally too-rich. (Then again, I have yet to try another printing service, thus, to test whether my printing service itself botched the printing.)

It would seem that my 2407 needs calibrating--but, the 2407 being permanently set to factory defaults, is un-calibratable. The 2408WFP, on the other hand, is--which tempts me to fork out for an upgrade. Its ability to be recalibrated aside, however, I'm wondering if the 2408 is in any other way(s) a much superior monitor to the 2407. (I'm not overly concerned with issues of image lag; my only real concern is 2-D image quality.) Do, for instance, the two units use exactly the same panel or is the 08 a real jump up in image quality from the 07?

Beyond that and if an upgrade is indeed called for I'm willing to consider suggestions for other monitors--having also, S-PVA or better panels. (I don't like the idea of edge-lit models like the Samsungs, since the very principle of it seems a disadvantage from the fully back-lit kind. Come on, AMOLED!)

To do this, you need to know the colour space, white point and gamma of your image. To match prints you need to calibrate your monitor to these values as well as profile your printer. These Dell units have no ability to regulate their contrast to simulate paper.

The 2408 uses a wide gamut S-PVA panel over the 2407. Neither are really intended for print matching.

I agree with the person above. I would go with a Dell U2410 or HP ZR24w to keep with the same price range. The HP may be better for printing.
