Hello,
I'm interested in the 2405 monitor from Dell.

Some questions about widescreen gaming:

1. If you run a game in widescreen, does everything look distorted, if it does not officially support the res? I know HL2 supports widescreen, but what about WoW? Does it look weird in WS?

2. Has anyone connected an XBOX using component to the TV? How does it look? Does it run fully in HD?

3. What kind of system should be used? Seems like to run at 1920 X 1200, you'll need some monster of a system.

4. Since the monitor's native resolution is 1920 X 1200, that running games below that will cause pixelaiton, not running at the native resolution. Can the game be run at other options and still look correct?

Thanks!

1. games that don't support widescreen will look stretched.

2.xbox using componet only supports 480i movie playback and 480p for most games. Movie playback looks like shit. Games look ok but are much better played on a tv.

3.To play games at native a high end system.

4.you can run games at normal aspect but you will have black bars on the sides. Games will look normal but will not fill the screen without using the fill.

Not correct, see this post

If you're talking about the movie playback at 480i then I am correct. If you're talking about games then its game dependent. I picked up the high def pack for the xbox yesterday and on the back of the box it says movie playback is in 480i only.

Click here and read first paragraph.

Just got my 2405 today and played few hours of WoW on it at 1920x1200. Running it with a AMD 64 3200 with 1 gig of memory and a BFG 6800 GT. Ogrimmar was a little laggy at around 20 fps or so. Everyone where else was 30ish or higher. Really liking the 2405 so far might get a new desk though since this one starting to get kinda out of room with this new LCD.

To play games with the black bars on the sides, will it still be in the native resolution? It must look like crap out of native.

Tony Hawk on Xbox supports HiDef.. some one with PICs of an XBOX game in HiDef would be appreciated.

A lot of games support widescreen natively, A lot more can be tweaked to support it . This is usually done by modifying an .ini file and adding the desired resolution)check out widescreengaming.com for more info. WoW supports widescreen natively by the way, So does FFXI, valve, epic, Id games, etc, etc. Pretty much all upcoming games will support widescreen as well.

If your game does not support widescreen, you can play fine with Black bars on the side (getting the same picture you'd get on an FP2001) or you can strech the image to fill the screen in which case the game will look streched (duh!)

My radeon 9700 pro drives the monitor just fine, I'm pretty sure much weaker cards can do too. In games, same deal as always, the higher the resolution, the lower the fps, nothing to do with the monitor. I can play CS:Source around 20-30 fps which kinda sucks.

Running games at 1680x1050 or 1280x960 or whatever still looks just fine. Don't worry be happy

And km23, the answer is YES...obviously...by definition. It doesn't look like crap out of native...sheesh

It actually does NOT look like crap out of native mode, it scales very nicely. you can choose to keep a 4:3 aspect ratio throught the screens' menu if you prefer though.
