Dell 2209WA vs 2007FP

I've been looking for a dual screen setup for a while and I guess its time to take the plunge.

Between the Dell 2007FP and 2209WA - which one is the best?

I know they have different resolutions and orientation, but picture quality wise, which one is best?

And is there any difference between the new e-IPS of the 2209WA and the older S-IPS for Dell 2007FP?

I'm based in London, UK and from www.pcbuyit.co.uk the costs are as follows:

Dell 2209WA £182.85
Dell 2007FP REV A05 S-IPS £281.75

Is there a marked difference in quality between these two monitors based on price?

If price was no option, would the decision change?

thanks

The 2209WA model is called detuned, which as far as I know means cheaper parts. E.g. the blu is supposed to be normally used in TN models.

I have another viewpoint. I wouldn't necessarily call it "detuned" but I think you're right about the BLU, which is the cause for the low price.

As far as I can tell, e-IPS is a new IPS design that allows for greater light transmission. The biggest drawback with IPS panels is that they do not let as much light pass through as a TN or VA panel. Thus monitors with IPS panels need stronger backlighting to get the same brightness. This is one reason why the IPS panels cost more. And probably why you don't see IPS panels on laptops (the power draw for a stronger backlight would kill the battery too fast)

I think the e-IPS is a new IPS design that lets more light through, and thus does not require a stronger backlight. This means the manufacturer can put in a lower powered backlight and still get acceptable brightness. This also means that the 2209WA does not have the wide gamut CCFL backlighting, because that is more expensive too.

The best I can go for sources is displayblog... better than nothing though?

Thanks for the replies.

And what about picture quality between these two models - is there a difference and which is better?

thanks again

Without taking the time to look for reviews and delta-E charts, or going back over the specifications, I'd hazard that they are probably pretty similar. They're both using the pretty much same fundamental technology, and neither display is advertised as wide-gamut, so color reproduction on each should be pretty similar too.

Picture quality is also very subjective. What kind of picture quality are you asking for? Color reproduction? Viewing angle stability? Response time? Black levels? Backlight uniformity?

What you should do is look for reviews of each monitor, and look for the performance charts on CALIBRATED profiles of each display (and IMO, buying a "good" panel like these and not having your own calibrator is a waste of money).

Maybe they managed to remove one filter layer, that made the display cheaper, more light transmitting, and more prone to bleed/uniformity issues. It seems this new display has more screen uniformity than the the older 2007WFP/FP had. Part of that could be smaller screen making it less obvious.

That could be it as well, but I know that my older 2005FPW with the same panel as the 2007WFP has little to no uniformity inconsistencies. Otherwise it is very similar in viewing characteristics to the 2209WA, with the only marked difference being the white shimmer vs the purple shimmer on blacks, off-angle.

One advantage the 2209WA has though is the virtually zero backlight flicker at low brightness levels, which does give it a visually very stable image.

I would take the 2007FP: 1600x1200 rocks. 1680x1050 is crap. 1050 pixels high just isn't enough.

Widescreen also rocks. If you didn't have 1200 pixels high before, you won't miss them. ;) But if you did... get a 1920x1200 model. :D

I have both monitors here. The 2007fpw is more uniform, shifts less when view angle changes and has deeper blacks. I'm still debating whether or not to keep the 2209wa.
