I'm looking to ditch my old 17" CRT for a new 20" LCD. I can get the Dell 2007FP for $391 and the Samsung 204B for $350. They both look great but I'm not sure which one to get. The samsung has a better response time, 5ms vs. 16ms, but the dell looks better. I play a lot of games and I don't watch a lot of dvd's on my pc. So it will be mainly used for gaming/web surfing.

Hmm, the Samsung uses a TN film panel which does not give as good viewing angles/colour reproductions but has a nice 5MS.

The Dell however has great egronomics, looks, inputs and it has a S-IPS panel, which is great. But the 16ms may be a little offputting.

I would go for the Dell.

I was thinking about the dell because my friend has the 19" ultrasharp and it looks awesome. But the only reason I am am cautious about going with the dell is the 16ms response time. That is quite a bit higher than most others in this price range. Most have a 5ms or 8ms response time. I just want a great gaming monitor that's also good for web surfing.

Check out the review of the dell on behardware, its alot faster than 16ms

My two cents. I bought the Dell 2007fp expecting the S-IPS panel but they had switched to Samsung PVA panels. A model with particularly bad viewing angles. So much so it actually has worse viewing angles side to side than TN. I know because I replaced it with a TN screen and I am MUCH happier with the viewing angles on my TN screen, when I found them intolerable on the 2007fp with PVA.

Be warned: This is one of the Dell screens that you are playing the panel lottery with.

See this image to see what I am talking about. While the numbers for absolute viewing angles report as higher on VA tech (PVA/MVA essentially the same), TN is actually better in the real world:

That is VA on top. The worse. This starts to happen when you move your head an inch or even not at all as the sides of the screen are already at some angle.

IPS in the middle. Acknoledged king of viewing angles a lot like CRT.

Lowly TN on the bottom is actually not that bad and much better in use than VA.

So I didn't answer your poll because when you play the Panel lottery. If you win and get the IPS. Then the Dell is the best. Lose and get PVA, then I would take the Samsung.

I'm gonna keep looking for reviews until I can make up my mind. Does anyone know of any reviews that compare these two side by side. Also is there another monitor that I am overlooking that is as good or better than these two.

The NEC LCD2070NX is an amazing S-IPS panel that is better than all of the above.

Provantage has it for $466.

pc mag:

The LCD2070NX is aimed at professionals who regularly perform digital image or video editing. The native resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 is ideal for such purposes and, in tests, it performed remarkably well. Colours were accurately rendered with smooth gradients, and contrast was excellent. The panel also did very well during movie and games playback with no evidence of blurring or streaking during fast-moving scenes.

We'd go as far as saying that the LCD2070NX is one of the best-performing TFT panels we've seen. If you want a versatile TFT display with a high resolution, it's hard to beat."
