I was curious to see if there are any number of 2005FPWs out there without any backlight issues at all (since it seems like we never hear of them). It would be nice if you could post your revision info and manufacturing date up as well. I'm expecting the result to be skewed towards defective units just because chances are that people with excellent 2005FPWs probably wouldn't spend their spare time reading through forums discussing its problems.

I'll leave the dead pixel issue out for now since it is a still a common issue with many of LCDs on the market today.

If you have more than one 2005FPW, pick the one you use as your primary display.

Also if you do have an "excellent" 2005FPW it would be nice if you could post some pics of it with the lights off (with a black background). I don't think I've seen any pictures of a flawless one yet so it would be nice to know they exist :)

-I think there is a poll like this already.

Anywho:

It wasn't totally dark in the room, but pretty close. Shot taking during a blank ScreenSaver

I'll be sure to post my results here tomorrow after I get mine. Is there another poll I should also report in at?

Pretty interesting to see that most are good or fair, especially after all the complaints in the longer threads about this monitor. Of course, if everyone has been playing musical monitors, it makes sense that most would end up with one they could stand and it'd be voted "good" :)

I'll vote once mine arrives, though that probably won't be for another week or two.

Yeah, the fact is that this isn't that big of a deal. After having mine for a day I'm realizing that the only time I notice the leakage is when I look for it... otherwise I won't even notice it (maybe my panel isn't as bad as some). Now that I'm paying attention to it I'm also noticing that a lot of other LCDs have some bad "leakage" as well. My friend's Samsung has some bad leakage on both sides of the screen (bad enough where it affects colors other than black). If indeed new 2005FPWs eliminate it altogether, then I'll call in for a replacement, otherwise I'm pretty happy with it as it is.

Oh, and Copycat... how long had your screen been on when you took that photo? Mine will look like that for about 10 minutes when I first turn it on... the leakage shows up after it's warmed up a bit.

Could people post screen shots when they get theirs, just to give myself and others who are waiting what to expect. Considering these are the newest batches, there should be little to no leakage. Thanks.

I will post mine up as soon as it gets in. Ordered on the 5th at the cutoff for $560 shipped to Southern California.

I'd be interested in this too... if the overwhelming majority of people receiving new displays start claiming that they are perfect then I'd call in for a replacement. Otherwise I think that the leakage on mine is subtle enough where I won't bother going through the hassle of swapping it.

Something is definitely going on at Dell with these things... I don't think anyone has commented about their displays shipping recently, the majority seem to have gotten their 2005FPWs delayed till late next week. I think Dell either ran out, or they're awaiting a new batch from the manufacturer and retesting existing displays.

Couldn't tell ya exactly. About 3 days though...roughly. I have had my screen for like 3 weeks now..no change.

It had been on for 3 days? With the backlight on all the time (I.E. no power saving)?

Mines fair, it's there, goes out a couple inches, but not noticable half the time. Though, even with my room lite, coming back in from a break it stands out when it's on the Win XP screensaver. I'll be asking for an exchane, no reason not to. But I think I'll be keeping it in the end. I hope I can get one of those Jan 2005 A01 builds.

First pic, the left screen is a 2+ year old Dell 15inch E151fp. Middle is you know who, but a December A00 model. The last on the right is the 15.4inch widescreen Gateway 7405gx laptop, which is a great screen for a laptop.

umm, power save comes on after about 2 hours. So not 3 days straight...sorry. At that time though I had probably been working on my computer for about 6-7 hours straight.

TimothyB, my 2005FPW looks pretty much the same as yours (though the leakage is a bit milder, I think). I think I'm also going to take the same appoach and call in for a replacement with the knowledge that I'll keep the screen in the end if the replacement is any worse.

Copycat, that's pretty good then. Your 2005FPW is apparently living proof that it is possible to get flawless backlighting on this panel.

In one of the threads I'm worried about some of the new complaints, where Dell wants to charge your credit card for the replacement at full price, or some saying you can only get like to like replacements, so if it was A00, you'll get a A00 replacement. Plus I'm not looking forward to India phone tech support that want's to troubleshoot everything before a replacement.

Though, on the charging for a replacement, I think someone said that that only happens when you don't send back one of the monitors within 10 days, but a new post said through their e-mail support experience they wanted to charge rightaway.

I'm not looking forward to the Indian tech support either...

I did a replacement on a PDA through Dell once and they basically seem to put a temp charge for the replacement. Once they receive the unit back it goes away. In the end the only charge on my card was the one from when I ordered the PDA in the first place (at a discounted price). I don't know if Viper was just having bad luck with tech support or what. Also don't think there is any truth to the A00 to A00 bs that someone was getting from Dell tech support. It may be necessary to talk with a supervisor if you run into this stuff.

If they try to charge $750 for my replacement they'll find not enough funds, will they stil send it anyways? I hope they don't expect everyone's credit card to have enough funds to be charge twice with something so expensive and have enough room.

I think they'd still send it.. it's not an actual charge (at least not as far as I know). I remember someone else had the same question and he got his reaplacement anyway. You'd probably run into a big problem though if the replacement doesn't get back to them in a timely manner. Frankly I don't know if people would be able to do 6+ replacements as some people have if this was a problem.

I have some relatively minor leakage in the upper right-hand corner of my 1st 2005FPW, so I sent it back. My previous displays from Dell didn't have this problem, so I'm not satisfied. I previous have a 1900FP and a 1901FP and neither had backlight issues or dead pixels.

SInce the 2005FPWs have mor pixels and are newer I expected that I might fin a few dead/stuck pixels. I found 2 on each of mine, and I can live with that. However, the backlight thing is a major annoyance, and I'm not going to keep that screen with it.

My 2nd 2005FPW (spanned horizontal desktop 3360x1050) is doing fine so far with only 2 stuck pixels. So far it hasn't affected anything during normal use and I only notice them when I'm trying to see them, so I'm not sending that one back.

However, if they start shipping good panels with no stuck pixels and no backlight issues, I'll be exchanging it. I don't want to screw around with problems down the road because of their poor first revision run of monitors.

The only thing I'm debating is whether I should wait a bit to see what's going on with newer units or whether I should call in today to give myself more time to deal with the replacement process. My 21-day window closes on the 23rd. I'm sort of worried that if I call in too soon they'll just send me a unit from their existing stock of 2005FPWs instead of sending me something from the new batch.

If you get a replacement that still has problems you can continue to call them and exchange until they finally get you a new one. I would call now and get the problem documented. Then if you have a better chance of getting it corrected in the future. If you can show a history of problems (like backlights on multiple replacements being bad) then you have something to complain about when the new revisions ship.

I doubt Dell actually charges your card. If anything they should just hold the amount. So long as you send the old one back they will release those funds.

I have called Dell probably about 20 times in the past 2 months and never once got what everyone says to be "indian tech support". I find this to be a myth. I have had many calls with Dell prior to the past 2 months and also never experienced this. But maybe im just lucky.

Wow. Funny. Now that I look at the pics I took of the 2005 on my CRT, I can't see the bleed-through in the corners anymore. The LCD is definitely brighter than my CRT.

Well, now that I've maxed out the brightness on my CRT, I can see the bleed-through. Phew! Thought I was going crazy for a sec!

Do me a favor............turn the brightness down to 50% then using you video cards control panel turn the gamma down to 0.7 or 0.8...........is the bleed through still there? Dell sets these to max brightness from the factory which is not right.
