I recently purchased a Dell 1747 laptop and installed a SSD. I did a clean install of Win 7 Pro x64 and forgot to take a snapshot of Device Manager as I usually do before wiping the original drive.

I now have a Unknown Device and an unidentified "Mass Storage Controller" showing up in device manager. If anyone has an idea of what these are or would be willing to provide a snapshot of their device manager on a like system, it would be greatly appreciated.

I would prefer not to go through the headache of a factory restore to the old drive (now my second) etc. etc. etc. to find out.

THANKS!!

Good call & thanks for the link :D

That was in fact the unidentified Mass Storage Controller.

One down, one to go...

just download all the drivers for your service tag. i never bother to take snapshots of any device manager, especially with a dell.

Yeah I know...I'm just really not a big fan of that...

Case in point, the first driver I tried was for the freefall sensor which darn near borked my SSD

well you obviously have to use some common sense. :p

its not like i change any of the dell systems i maintain anyhow, lol.

As it turns out, in case anyone else stumbles across this post with the same issue, the "unknown device" is in fact the freefall sensor. You just have to be careful in the way you install it if you have a SSD.
