Alright, my first mission in the networking world is to take delivery trucks and link them back to home base so an operator will be able to track them on a map. I'm not a hardware guy; I’m an idea guy so I need some suggestions.

In a setup for each truck I was thinking of using a pocket pc. Something simple with a windows base on it. That would be connected to a RoyalTek Sapphire GPS Mouse, or something like it (I like it cause its cheep and compact) to find the lat and long. This would all be transferred over a VPN and plotted.

There are some flaws. I don’t have a way to get the pocket pcs online and I don’t have an application to pull it all together. Ideas?

Have you googled around for products out there to do this? Just from a few seconds of googling I found a few different vendors that take use different solutions to your problem. One of them is a pay for ping and the cost of the GPS tranceiver, another is just the cost of the GPS tranceiver and then you download the data later (non-real-time). That was just two sites I looked at. This is not a trivial first assignment. I don't know anything about budget (other than as cheap as possible), schedule, or number of vehicles in the fleet but you should approach this logically by weighing in all the differnet products commercially available and then of course your initial thought of a Pocket PC. Do an analysis and then select and solution.

My uncles a trucker, and theres ready to go solutions for this like the above poster said, that would be my recommendation.
 
There are GPRS and EDGE cards from cellular companies that fit in some pocket pcs, although that usually requires a dock for them. I have used them in the past. They work pretty well, but are slightly bulky. However, that is the best solution for getting them online, as long as your trucks tend to stay in areas that have cell coverage.

Someday you could just use a wireless card, or a device with built in wireless, but we are still years out from that day.
 
I would sugest visiting teletype.

I have not used their fleet tracking stuff, but their personal software is good stuff.
 
There's a company we use who's trying to get us to purchase their tracking system. Trapeze Software is there name, my boss use to work with their lead programmer I think.
 
I have to thank you guys for all your help, i dont know exactly what i'm going to use yet, but now i have a plan, and thats better than nothing.
