i have 2 HDs in a RAID 1 setup, and when i boot, the loader says that both individual drives are healthy, but the raid is degraded. do i have to rebuid the array and lose that data?

Degraded mode on a RAID 1 array can many times is the two drives are out of sync with one another, you should have the option somewhere in the cards BIOS to sync them or rebuild and you shouldn't loose anything. Posting what mobo and drives you are using will be helpful for us as well to help further.

Might want to test the drives individually with diagnostics to and see if theres a cause it went into degraded mode to begin with.
 
I'm using an Adaptec Raid controller on my Dell Server, with 2 200gb Maxtor drives.
