Defragmenting?

Is defragmenting worth it on a regular pc? If so, is the windows one good enough or is there a better program?
 
yes, defraging is good.
Just defrag your C drive on startup every 6 months.
and also defrag the Games drive if you have such.
for all video and audio purposes, defraging is helpful, but not as needed.

Windows defrag isn't a MS defrag, its a 3rd party software integrated into windows.

PerfectDisk is another very good defrag utility. The built-in windows one is near worthless, because it'll defrag files, but not free space, so as soon as you put new files on the system or modify files, it starts getting fragmented again. Also you should defrag more like once a month, rather than once in 6. More often if you install and uninstall software/games often, or if you download a lot. If you end up using Diskeeper or Perfectdisk, just set up a schedule to automatically defrag your drives every 2-3 weeks at like 3am.

Also if you move large files around alot, you should defrag often.

Diskeeper is a 3rd party program, it doesn't come with Windows. Regardless, I would highly recommend o&o defrag. I used Diskeeper for a while, and it just doesn't seem like it always did the job. It would rearrange the colored blocks and appear to work, but the next day you would go back in and it would look like it did b4 you supposedly defrag'd. With O&O I have not had this issue at all. I highly recommend it.

Actually Windows XP ships with what could be called "Diskeeper lite".. If you check out the windows utility, you will see that it is copyrighted to Microsoft, and to Executive Software (the creater of Diskeeper) Microsoft stopped bothering to make their own when they could licence a better product cheaper. (same with Microsoft Backup being made by Veritas)

But it is a nutered version of Diskeeper that can not defragment the swap file, or free space.

I have gone back to perfect disk because i think it works best, but I have a question for you:

Does the automatic defrag work for you in O&O? It seems for weeks on my old computer I had it set to do it and it never started once. It worked in the beginning defraging once or twice a day real quick, then just bottomed out not doing anything.

Works fine for me on about a dozen different machines. You must've botched a setting.

Yes, it doesn't defrag free space,... which makes it half useless.

Exactly. Diskeeper is Diskeeper, no matter who licensed it to MS what ships with Windows is crap compared to DK and my favorite: O&O.
