defragmenting raid 0 array

hi, im new to raid arrays, and have two raptors in raid 0 with the intel 82801FR sata raid controller / intel matrix thing.

i went to defrag the drive and then stopped, as i saw two large chunks of data and files with huge amounts of fragments, then realising it was most likely going to reverse the effect of the raid :(.

anyone know how to defrag the drives whilst maintaining the raid?

Yeah, you just defrag as normal. You have to remember...Windows sees it as one single harddrive. It will arrange the data how it thinks is best. Once that is happening....the RAID controller handles the splitting of the data between the two drives. It's just a damn shame RAID0 didn't pan out as big as hyped. Most of us are breaking our arrays and going back to single drives.
 
what u r seeing is normal, just as mentioned above, defrag as normal. You'll find that you'll need to defrag more frequently with a raid array as well.

Why is that? It should be the same as a single drive.
 
You've got two drives, so more chance of a file getting fragmented, more likely even as the spindles don't sync up either like you can do with some scsi drives.
 
Windows treats a RAID array as a single hard drive. The file splitting between the drives is all low level and invisible to windows. How does windows see more fragmentation just because there are two physical disks behind a RAID controller?
