Defrag Done (Dialup Alert)

It's telling me that defrag is done. Picture doesn't necessarily convey it well, but that HD is swiss cheese. A third of the middle shows as pure red, or fragmented files. Every time I click defrag it runs for about 5 seconds and then tells me it's complete.

Window's defrag utility sucks,... sorry to say.

I use some command line based program called WinDefrag. While it doesn't do an astonishigly perfect job at packing files up at the front of the disk, it does absolutely defrag everything. All around it is 2000% better than XP's stock defrag program. But it runs substantially longer because of it. Ohh yeah, did I mention it's freeware?

another suggestion, reboot into safe mode. If programs are accessing files, the defrag program included with windows won't move them.

I usually turn off my Swap file, and then do a defrag. I wish there was a way you could tell windows to put the swap file at the end of a drive so it doesn’t interleave itself with the other data. (and I mean in a different way than partitioning.) Linux Distros useualy have their own partition for swap.

I think I remeber hearing about some way of using a seperate partition for swap with windows, and people would actually share the swap partitions between windows and linux. Don't know how to do it though, lol.

Tried Diskeeper. It is handy but that prog tries six ways from Sunday to phone home. Guess that's inevitable for shareware. Makes me wary though.

Diskeeper highlighted the point that someone else made in this thread, a lot of that fragmented space is riddled with bits of swap file. It's a 10 G drive (yes, I know, tiny... it's really just intended as a boot drive) with a 1.2 G swap file. Maybe I should create a partition just for that?

I was pointed to this by a friend: O&O defrag. It is particurally ineteresting as it is two parts, an interface and the defragger, which runs as a windows service. The server edition is even network administable. Most important, though, it did an amazing job defraggin my volumes, even after movign a lot of files, one drive is 0.64% fragmented and the other (system drive) is less than 2. Even allows you to organize by data acsess, and other methods.
