I've gotten tired of looking around various forums where nobody seems to know the definitive answer. AMD/ATI's website fails miserably at actually answering this question. I hope someone here can answer it.

Do I need 1 crossfire connector or 2 to connect my two 4850's? I'm running two monitors one 1920x1200 the other 1440x900.

Please and thank you.

Pretty sure you only need one. The second connector is to hook up a third and then a fourth card.

When I contacted ATii, I got no response, but back when I had Visiontek cards, they said you only had to use one, but they recommended two.
Not sure if that helps tho...

i have actually tested this with 2x hd4870 512mb. i got exactly the same framerates in crysis, bioshock and tf2 , and same scores (within margin of error) in vantage and 3d06 whether using 1 or 2 connectors. now i didnt sit down for a few hours and document this. one of my hd4870 was bought used and didnt come with a connector, so for the first week or 2 i only used 1. then i bought one from the ati store and used both. so if you are anal, use 2. otherwise you only need 1.

Is there a shortage of crossfire bridges?
I literally have a pile of those things. I was thinking of building a tower out of them.

you can actually use crossfire w/o the connector until 1920x1200 and it should work :)

The only reason I even ask is because I'm considering getting a 2nd 4850 and none of the 4850's on newegg seem to come with crossfire connectors anymore.

Out of the 30 or so at newegg only a handful seem to come with them. I bought a HIS 4850 practically on launch day and it came with one, but now that model is out of stock.

I think according to the specs it is hd3xxx series and above only require 1 bridge. 2 is for tri-fire.

When I had my 4850's I had to use one. When I used two the system wouldn't detect my videocards.
