Defective E8500 CPU?

I just built a new computer with an E8500 processor on an Asus P5Q SE Plus motherboard. Everything seems to run fine and I get just one beep on start up but only a black screen appears. If my CPU is defective would I still be getting a beep and have my mouse and keyboard lightup as if it were working properly?
 
I just had an epic battle getting my e8500 rig set up last night. Up to 4 am (testing) and still have no cd drive connected (only one older ide/ata attach on the newer system and had to choose between older hard drives and the dvd drive). And with no cd I had to copy the contents of the utility cd from the box to a flash drive on a borrowed notebook so I could get the ethernet port working, still mildly exhausted.

Had a similar issue with the system not booting to windows. For me it turned out I had not completely inserted one of my ram sticks and it just kept restarting and not booting. Scared the hell out of me though.

Same sort of thing happened years ago on an older system where I had swapped out a new video card, and the thing sounded like it was going to explode, and would not start. In that case it turned out there was a strip of metal (from those flimsy back facings where the MB ports are pushed through) that was making contact with the motherboard and it was shorting some circuit.

Once that was removed it worked fine. Lesson, you could have a busted processor, but check the physical connections and other insertions to make sure everything is kosher.

+1, if all is well connected, then test the cpu seating and PSU
 
I remember once time when I forgot to take the plastic cap off the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and my mobo kept shutting off. I looked at my cpu and laughed.
