Defective 4850?

I just bought a sapphire 4850 today and i suspect its faulty. The first system I inserted the card with manages to boot into vista, but it blue screens saying the new hardware has problems. I went into safe mode and I found out that vista can't even detect the card. Under dxdiag, everything is N/A. And since i cant install the drivers without having windows detecting the card, im pretty much stuck at this point.

I also tested it with another computer, but this one has xp pro instead of vista. This time around, it just hangs with a black screen with a mouse just when windows starts to load.

So what do you guys think, lemon or not?

If it does that with that video card only then yes it is a lemon. Exchange as soon as you can.
 
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that as soon as i pull the card out, both computers boot fine.
 
Both systems are using on board video. But I've used an x600pro for both machines before until the fan died. My psu is a coolmaster 600 watt SLI & Crossfire ready.
 
Yeah, definitely sounds like the card is a dud. Get it exchanged or send it in for warranty :).
 
I suspect the card too.
Before taking it back though, check for a newer motherboard BIOS, you may have hit an older BIOS issue.
 
I updated the bios just as you suggested as well as the chipset. But it is still no go.
 
Looks like you've got your answer then. Look into getting a replacement.

OP, you need to hook us up with more information. have you uninstalled current onboard video drivers? have you tried disabling onboard video prior to installing the new card? since you didn't mention that you did any of this im assuming you didn't and you could be experiencing a conflict of some sort. if you have performed these steps then perhaps the card is faulty.

Also are you using a power supply that is powerful enough to give the card enough juice?
 
I've uninstalled the drivers and disabled on board video. Sorry for not mentioning it. My power supply is a Cool master 600 watt, so i don't think it will be a problem. The other computer i tested it with has an antec 350 watts psu, which should be okay for this card as well.

IMHO, your card is defunct. Just go and get a new one exchanged.
 
Update

I plugged into another system today with a 450 watt enermax psu and the card ran fine. It seems like this card needs AT LEAST 20A on the rails or else it may not function properly. So for those who are interested in this card, MAKE SURE you get a premium power supply.
