defecting ssds

Hi all,

I've recently got myself a Supermicro barebone (http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1u/5017/sys-5017c-mtf.cfm), 350W gold 80 certified.

Everything works and is installed
xeon e3-1230v2, 16GB kingston hynix valueram, 4x WD RE 3TB drives and botting esxi on a usb drive. Now for the VM's i want to have an SSD.

I've tried 2x a Crucial m4 mSata and an Intel 320 SSD (1"8) . Small in regards to the space.

I attach the ssd to the extra power connector in the enclosure. With a convertor adapter i attach the ssds to them. But for some reason..they get defective. Either, i am very unlucky, or the server breaks the SSD for some weird reason .


What could be the problem?
 
Can you elaborate on how they are defective? Do they not power up? Do they show up in the bios? Show up in OS? Have you tried them in a different machine?
 
To elaborate; they are not showing in bios... basically.. not showing in anything. Also in different machines. I should've tried it in another machine first to see if it was working then..
 
Could the 1.8 inch drive adapter be bad?

I am afraid it's something else. The previous mpcie(msata) adapter to sata also did the same twice. Now the microsata (for the 1"8 drive) is just a cable,.. but same problems.

Something destroys them... but really do not know why
 
I think i've got the problem, i reply it here to help others out.


mSata / 1"8 SSD drives use 3,3V. Normally, a sata power cable shouldn't make it a problem. In the super micro barebone i've got, there's only a molex power supply for the drives. They run on either 12V or 5V.

By converting from molax to sata power, it only delivers 12V and 5V. So using them will blow up your drive.

These power specifications are hard to find. I now check stickers for it to be absolutely sure.

My solution is not tested yet,..but i will soon.


So... molex + adapter + small mSata / MSata is a no go...
 
Using a molex adapter will not blow up your drive. The 3.3v line just isn't hooked up, so the drive will receive no power as the 5v and 12v lines are not connected inside. You can get molex adapters with resistors to provide 3.3v.
 
I would not use an adpater that provides 3.3V by resistors only. The adapters I have seen included a voltage regulator to generate the 3.3V from 5 or 12V.
 
A dremel and a hammer will prevent it from ever defecting again. That's for sure.
 
Thanks for the replies. I think i should have to leave the idea of using a small SSD in my server. I really wanted to add another one for backup.. but unfortunately,.. i think i have to go with a normal 2"5 inch one.

Perhaps i will get that hammer out. In the end, everything will fit with a hammer :) (dremels are for the youngsters ;) )
