Is anyone aware of a way to set default affinity on a process? I've got the console running on one of the cores of my laptop, and would love to have it startup set to CPU1, rather than having to manually set it in the task manager. I know it's not hard to manually do it, but time saved is time saved :p

Note: this box is running on vista, so XP solutions may or may not work

If you're running SMP for windows, there is a 3rd party software piece at Folding Community Forums that will check and assign affinity every 10 minutes. It runs as a service. Just hit up the FCF and install it.

If you're running VMware then you have to do it manually.

schenksmill does not want to run SMP client on both cores but lock one CPU console client to one core.

The only thing I can think than might help is "SMP Seesaw".
I've not tried it in Vista but I use it to isolate my games on one core while the SMP client runs on the other three.

It quicker using that program as I can have a short cut on my desktop for it rather than opening task manager and then searching for the affinies of each core.

I get better Gaming + Folding preformance that way.

Luck ................ :D

smp seesaw seems to be a pretty decent middle ground....definitely makes things quicker overall....just kinda wish MS had put some flag in the options :)

As an old timer who has recently added a few C2Ds to the garden, I'm unclear if one needs to be concerned with affinity when running 2 console clients.
Indeed, could someone explain when affinity is relevant?

It really just forces threads to a certain core....i do it for neatness if nothing else....isolate my console to one core, then other important things/cpu heavy things to another core so they don't steal each other's cycles

while running 2 clients, i just really do it so that they don't try to use each other's cycles (even though they should handle themselves just fine)

Setting affinity for just 2 single CPU consoles will offer very little gain.

You're better using a single SMP client.

Setting affinity for two console client will only realy gain you a few seconds per work unit.

It works well with the SMP client on a 4 core boxen because if one of the threads stalls because that core is loaded to 100% by a game then the whole client seams to stall on ocassion.
Also the CQD CPU is realy a 2+2 setup so treat it like a pair of dual C2D's.
By locking 2 clients to each pair of core there's less traffic on the FSB so they run slightly faster.
Its a shame there no dynamic way of locking the client cores to the CPU cores.

Luck ............ :D

Task Manager->Processes....right click on a process....set affinity

same thing for XP And Vista

Thanks schenksmill. :)
Tigerbiten, that link seems nonfunctional, at least temporarily.

Fold on!
