Dedicated-GPU PSU or Better single PSU?

I apologize up front for the length of this post, but I wanted to air all the issues and options.

I've been involved in two threads over the past few days concerning whether my new Ultra V-series 500w PSU (an admittedly cheap, but universally regarded as solid though not stellar unit) would be sufficient to fuel my new ATi Radeon X1900XT, and also whether Thermaltake's W0099RU (Power Express) dedicated-GPU PSU (5.25" drive bay unit) would be a worthy solution to pick up any slack.

Well, having confirmed that the Ultra + Thermaltake solution will work, it has come down to this: better to have the two PSUs or purchase a new, superior single PSU (and trying to get rid of the Ultra, for which I paid $10 after rebate, on Ebay)?

In terms of power demand, what little I've been able to find on the Web indicates that the X1900XT would use about 120w max and 8-10 amps on the 12v rail. Therefore, Thermaltake's unit -- which produces 250w and 21 amps continuous (with 2 12v rails) -- would be far more than enough, as the motherboard will be supplying 75w of power as it is with the W0099RU picking up any slack above this figure (source: Thermaltake's Tech. Dept.). So, it looks like the W0099RU might even be able to run twin X1900XTs without issue.

Unfortunately, it's my 500w Ultra V-series that may could run short if I attempt to run it solo, since it boasts only 28 amps on a single 12v rail and ATi recommends having 30 amps. Whether the 18 amps remaining on the 12v rail (since, as stated above, the X1900XT will take about 10 amps max) would be enough to run the rest of my system is anyone's guess, there is no way to know -- short of risking my system -- whether it will be sufficient. Some on this forum have said their PSU with the same 12v spec (28 amps max) runs their X1900XT system perfectly, but their units came from superior makers to mine. So, mine could work. Still, the worry -- beyond out and out damaging/ruining my components -- is that if my system suffered hampered performance due a slightly power-starved GPU, would I be able to recognize that as the issue? The safe bet, then, is to buy a better single PSU (at least one with 30+ amps on the 12v rail) or go with the current PSU + Thermaltake W0099RU solution spoken of above.

On the face of it, the latter solution (PSU + dedicated-GPU PSU) looks best. 250w of power, more than enough amps on the 12v rails, all for just $50. But the down side may come in the form of additional heat, increased noise level and a bigger energy bill. Then again, the heat may be negligible, the units may be quiet, and the energy bill may solely depend on the draw of the system, not the units running it, so I don't know if any of these are key factors.

The appeal of the better single PSU solution, down on total output as it may be compared with the PSU + dedicated-GPU PSU option, is in its simplicity: one PSU covering all your needs, potentially cooler, quieter and less of a contributor to the energy bill. Also, it's my sense that I can get a solid 500w-550w PSU with 30+ amps on the 12v rail (or multiple 12v rails) for less than, say, $80, so this isn't much more costly than the Thermaltake dedicated-GPU PSU unit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The first thing people always assume but never bother to confirm is "if this PSU is not enough power my system is at risk."

That is unlikely.

When your power supply doesn't cut the mustard, you'll see 12V rails drop. You'll experience locks ups and artifacts. More than likely sentinel software will alert you that there's not enough power for the video card.

Your computer does not burst into flames.

As for the additional heat: If you have a PSU that's 75% efficient and puts out 100W of heat, it doesn't matter if you break that down into two PSU's, each 75% efficient putting out 75W and 25W of heat. At the same power output, the heat output is the same. The big difference here is that the Thermaltake sucks the air into the case. Now if the PSU is mounted in the top 5.25" bay, I don't think there's an issue. But that's something that I'm sure will vary from case to case.

You've spent $10 on a PSU and are considering another $50 for a 5.25" bay PSU. It's your money, but I don't think there are any single PSU solutions out there with 49A (28A + 21A, right?) on the 12V rails selling for $60... or twice that.

But I've already told you all this via PM. ;) We'll see what other people say.
 
Hey jonny, a while back there was a thread where some people said dedicated PSU's such as this thermaltake and the FSP BoosterX 3 were not safe because of grounding or something and could blow up your system. I took it with a grain of salt then, becasue I can't image a company pushing a product that would be that instable.
 
That's because they use a two conductor AC input instead of a three conductor with a ground pin. Same thing a laptop uses and goodness knows laptops burst into flames left and right. Just look at Dell.

The housings of the PSU's are metal, and you screw them to your metal case with metal screws. I think if grounding was an issue, these multiple engineers at multiple PSU factories would've thought of that. ;)

Maybe if you have a plexi case or plastic rails.. dunno.. hold on, I've got the Thermaltake on my desk. Let me power it up... Ok.... Let me touch the metal housing with my tongue... ok... nope. No tingle.

Oh.. and there's a ground wire leading back to the main ATX connector too. ;)
 
Again, Jonny, thank you for your attention to my issues -- I came back to the forums with them because I didn't want to trouble you overmuch with my PMs.

And I did have questions outstanding that may be obvious to those who understand PSUs, watts and amps, but not to a novice like me.

Based on your most recent response, I'll test my system with 500w alone first, as it sounds like it's got a chance of running everything, and very little risk of ruining my other components.

If you happen to glance at this thread again, I'd like to know what "sentinel software" you're speaking of -- and if it's something one has to obtain, where to get it.

And if the V-Series alone doesn't cut the mustard, it sounds like adding the dedicated-GPU PSU is the better option, and I don't see why I couldn't mount it in the top 5.25" slot.

I own what I consider a decent PSU and have had it before even thinking of going crossfire. Once I did go crossfire I realezed a new PSu would be needed. I decided to give Thermaltake's a shot after speaking with an ATi rep and it friggin works great. 50 bux to me was alot easier to swallow than 120+ Also, I like the odea of a seperate PSU for GPU dunno why.

Comes with the video card. Yours should have. Or am I wrong? It monitors the video card and can pop up a warning if it thinks you don't have enough power going to the card.
 
Re: sentinel software. My card may very well come with it, but since I've yet to build the machine (and it isn't installed in my current one), I don't know. I will certainly look out for it once I get the software installed, etc. And if it doesn't come with it, I'll look for software that performs the function elsewhere.

Saw you have the same case I am using for a build. I was a little concerned about the airflow given the restrictive front intake vent. If it all works, I'd be curious to know what temps you get under load for your CPU and GPU, as you have a hotter GPU in your config (mine is a X850XT)

As far as the powersupply, you proabably will be fine solo on the x1900xt with your ultra. I run my x1900xt on a Antec Neo 480 and its fine. I have two of those ultras and run them in other hi draw systems (overclocked X800XT') and have had no trouble. Like the one guy said, keep an eye on your 12 volt rails. If they fluctuate much under load (I Like to run both prime 95 and 3dmark loops) then you may have issues. If not, then you are looking pretty good.
