Dedicated GPU PSU, Is it for me?

Hey everyone, Ive been looking into going sli with dual 7900gt's. I currently have a Enermax Liberty 500w psu thats sli certified. Currently im pushing 4 120mm fans ( 2 are LED), 1 HD and 1 Combo Drive. I was looking at possibly getting a new psu, but say the FSP X3 Gpu booster and wondered if was a good idea. I would rather not have to buy a new psu, since my enermax is rock solid. Will my psu be moer than adequate for sli? or will should i consider a gpu psu or an entirely new psu? thanx
 
i'd say you're fine. 7900GT's dont consume too much power even in sli.
 
any more thoughts? I dont want to push my psu too hard by going sli
 
thank you very much everyone for your time and answers. In the future i would like to get a beefier psu for when i get a G80 or the newest thing from ati. What kind of wattage should i be aiming for?
 
And if you do need more power, those add on PSU's are great if you have a solid PSU to start with.

Think about it; if you like your current PSU because it's modular or doesn't crossload, has little ripple, etc. you can hang on to it and just add a PSU in the 5.25 bay. Not to mention that adding the PSU would cost less than another, bigger PSU and that you can end up with 700, 750, 800W of power, etc. and spend half as much getting two power supplies instead of one big one.
 
Even though someone started a similiar post after me, I was doing a little research into the 5.25 gpu dedicated power supplies. Currently I see a 250w offering from thermaltake and a 300w unit from FSP (fotron) Now I may consider one of these because i like the idea of running my gpu(s) independent from the rest of my rig. I do have some questions regarding these units...

1) I know the general opinion regarding thermaltake, but is the extra 50w the Fortron offers necessary? Will the quality and reliability of the Fortron be superior?

2) Taking into consideration the fact that the hot air from the PSU is not being exhausted outside the case, how much of a temp increase would one be able to expect ( roughly )

If i can think of any more question I will ad them to this post. I am definitely considering the fotron, but coul someone please tell me any advanteges to the thermaltake one?

The TT has a max of +12V@21A, peak power 300W.

The Fortron has a max of +12V@25A, peak power 400W & Fortron is a much more trusted name!

Get the Fortron. :D
 
So it is apparent that the fortron version is technically superior. However, I was wondering if the price difference between it and the thermaltake version could be a deciding factor. The thermaltake version is approx 45 at the egg, while the fortron is 90. Not to be a stickler on price, but is the price difference between the two enought to warrant purchasing the fortron?
 
It depends on who and how the TT is made.

I have one and if you can wait until Monday for me to take it apart, I'll get back to you.
