Dedicated GPU memory

Maybe a easy question for those who knows it, but i have no clue :)

How is it even possible that my AMD 7970 can use up to 3802 MB dedicated memory when it only has 3 GB = 3072 MB?

And one thing more. Why does my rig use dynamic GPU memory when only about 10% is used from the dedicated memory?

I might be wrong, but shouldn't the dedicated memory be used up before it starts to use dynamic memory?

The dedicated amount should never be over the max amount of dedicated video memory. You sure about that? You sure your card is a 3GB SKU?

Dynamic is likely another name for Host memory.... The place in system memory where some graphics resources go by default and where other graphics resources go only if there's no room left in dedicated video memory and the alternative to putting it into system memory is having the app crash, being out of video memory.

Some stuff will always be in host memory based on if/how it gets updated for each frame of rendering. In the case of certain types of graphics resources it is better for performance to keep it in system memory than to have to update it all the way on the GPU frequently. Certain resources that are regularly updated by the CPU are better off living in system memory (host).

Wow, thanks for the update. That clarified alot :)

Regarding my Vram. Yes, i'm certain that my cards only has 3 GB
I got two 7970 cards running in CF. But there still only one Vram that will be used if i've understood it right?
