I suppose this question has already been asked. Does anyone make dedicated 12v or 12/5v PSU that could run fans or harddrives? Maybe use a small quiet dual rail PSU for the MB and video cards and another unit for the rest of the 12v? Would this be efficient? I have alot of free space in the upper portions of my old supermicro 750 tower case that could be put to creative use.

I built one once, but to be honest it’s just too expensive. This is one of those places where that old or left over PSU you know won’t power your computer, or your afraid will kill your computer can be put to good use.

An old PSU with a half decent 12volt section will run all your fans, pumps etc just fine with no chance of damage to your machine and free up those extra AMPS for something worthwhile.

Just tap into the turn on wires to make it run and your all set.

Luck

I know ice czar and others will disapprove but I think I may go with the enermax eg701 at($130) over the PcP&C 501 at ($230 + tax + shipping = ~ $260) I really don't think I will need more than the enermax no matter how tempting the 501 is.

I dont disapprove :p

generally there is some reason to exceed spec for me to recommend it
the Enermax is a good supply of basic spec compliance

you do however need to do a bit more than just "tap into the turn on wires"
http://www.picard.demon.co.uk/atx/dual_atx.pdf ;)

so on the second PSU you want to short the grey Power Good to the Ground ;)

I ran dual 400Watts for several years that way
thats the same hardwire scheme you see is say a Coolermaster stacker adapter that will run 2 supplies
but without the added resistance an adapter would have
solder connections are best, but not absolutely required

you can also do it with a relay

wiring 2 power supply's shouldn't be a problem. I'm just uncertain it's worth the trouble. Sometimes I do this stuff just to tinker ;).

Just did a rough calculation. With 4 HD's, 2 optical, 2 ultra in SLI and my many fans I come up with 3.5A on 3.3v, 25A on 5v and 35A on 12v but this is assuming an extreme situation which I'm unlikely to face.

+5V @ 35A

that seems alot, just checking here
the mobo doesnt have a 4 pin +12V auxillary connector?

in which case that looks right
but if it does think you need to rework those
and select the AMD board w\ 4 pin connector ;)
which would switch the CPU draw to the +12V rail

I did choose the /w 4 pin +12Vaux. Think you may have misinterpreted my post I put it in non standard form :( . It is +3.3V @ 3.5A +5V @ 25A and +12V @ 35A

your right I didnt read that correctly
just wanted to double check, Ive made that mistake myself ;)

has a dramatic effect on the outcome

Hell's Bell's monarch decided to complicate my life and offer the PCP&P 510 sli. Now I have to decide between the enermax eg701 at $129 and the PCP&C at $225. That is a tougher call.

hmmm So will 18 amps on V12-2 cut it for dual 6800 ultra's, 2 + 2 raid and 3 amps worth of fans ? Throw in DVD to DVD copying and it might get tight. Man I hate buying stuff !

Edit: well those people at monarch are fickle PCP&C is added to power supply inventory on monday then removed on tuesday. Wonder if they had a issues with PCP&P over listing the 510sli price @$225
