Ok, so here's the story.

I had, up until recently, a XFX Radeon 5850. I have been very happy with this card.

About two weeks ago, and after having had the card for about fifteen months, the fan on it started making noise. Thinking it was perhaps clogged, I removed it, took it apart and gave it a thorough cleaning, applied new thermal paste, and put it back in. Two minutes after booting the system, the fan seized up with a loud squeal. I immediately killed system power and removed the card, opening a trouble ticket with XFX.

Fast forward two weeks. XFX RMAd the card, and in the interim, I purchased another 5850 from a coworker for $100, thinking to use them in CrossFire when XFX returned my repaired 5850. I just found out today that they replaced it with a 6870, an arguably lesser card in everything except tessellation.

So here's the question. Do I keep the 6870 and sell the 5850 to get another 6870? Do I insist that they take the 6870 back and replace it with another 5850, or perhaps a 6950?

What does [H] think?

6870's are absolutely incredible in CFX. I would just sell the 5850 and get a second 6870. Would more than likely be less trouble and quicker than having to send it back to XFX again.

ya 6870 for a 5850 i dont think you have a leg to stand on arguing performance difference.

take your replacement and be happy.

yeah I agree with the previous posters, the 5xxx series cards were ok but had some issues. The 6xxx cards are way better. And if you plan to crossfire than it's a no brainer, keep the 6870 and get a second one.

ya, crossfired HD6870s will be a lot faster than crossfired HD5850s. Sell the extra HD5850 for the $100 and use it toward another 6870 if you still want a crossfired setup.

BTW you are thinkin of the HD6850 being slighty slower then the HD5850. The HD6870 is faster.

Ya same as other posters

I'll even go as far as saying

Single card
5850 < 6870 < 5870 1GB

Dual card
5850 CFX < 6870 CFX = 5870 1GB CFX (give or take a few %)

Yeah, did a little bit more digging, and my initial conclusion was incorrect. Thanks for the help guys.
